I haven't been following the development of DECwindows. Did the issues regarding Apple's sueing Microsoft cause us to not use Printers and Disk Drive ICON's. More of a MAC or Looking Glass type of interface. What about folders. Will MOTIF give us that look and feel. Thanks, Steve

More of a MAC or Looking Glass type of interface. The requirements that came from on-high were quite explicit: Make it look just like a PC running MS/Windows. As far as we diverged from this (misguided?) dictum, we took grief. Do I sound bitter? -steve-
2019.3 | MAC's sell, MS-Windows have yet to take off | BDYSRF::SYSTEM | See ya in the NOTES files | Wed Jan 10 1990 19:26 | 15 |
I know that that decision was made a long time ago, but the reality is that the MAC interface is selling like hotcakes and the MS-Windows interface has yet to take off. Can we change. Is MOTIF going to help. OPEN VIEW by HP running on the PC and their workstation really has me worried. This is because DEC is not a PC Company (SIC). I do not see a ccomon interface in our DECwrite and DECdecision products. DECwindows does not provide appliactions that have a common look and feel. In the MAC you learn one app you know them all. > I do not see a ccomon interface in our DECwrite and DECdecision products. > DECwindows does not provide appliactions that have a common look and feel. > > In the MAC you learn one app you know them all. I echo these feelings! What's worse, many people point to these two products as examples of how DECwindows will provide a consistent view. We went through similar growing pains with ALL-IN-1. Now, we are doing it again with DECwindows. Being a programmer myself (whenever I'm forced to be), I don't like others forcing their dictates upon me with respect to a confining style. If DECwindows defines the user interface, but it doesn't have the capabilities that I need, then I have to extend it within my application. Then, when the standard gets brought up to the new level of completeness, I may be left out in left-field with a product change requirement. However, due to the significance of our statements around DECwindows, the user interface needs to be defined to the nth degree! As for the real discussion going on here, I have just come back from a customer with a SUN workstation setting on his desk who was asking why we can't have a truely "user friendly" interface like he has on his SUN. The equivalent to FileView that he was running showed everything as ICONs. What's more, he had the capability to easily design custom ICONs and associate them with an application's files so that he could extend the iconic representation of his world, or the providers of 3rd party applications could also provide the ICONs. It really looked nice and made FileView look antiquated. Not that I'm knocking FileView and the rest of DECwindows. I really think that we have great products that are much better than anything I've had before. But, glitz sells in this space!
