2016.0. "DECterm emulation CPU & memory load" by AIDA::CARCANO (Matteo Carcano, Italian ACT Milan) Tue Jan 09 1990 12:29

We are working on a project for the Milan Stock Exchange. They want to use
DECwindows stuff on VS3100 or DECw terminals and the question is, as usual,
what kind of CPU and which amount of memory we need for the client machine.
Of course, it depends on the application you are going to run.

Part of the application will be developed internally, so it's our
responsability to find out "numbers" for it.

Another part of the application will run "inside" a DECterm window.
Again, the load given by this application has to be evaluated by us.

The question is: are there numbers (CPU & memory) to describe the load (on the
client) of DECterm emulator in these two cases:

1) "n" DECterm windows are simply displayed (nothing is done inside) on
"n" different servers (executed on a single client CPU)

2) 24x80 char buffers are displayed on the "n" DECterm windows. In other words
which is the load given by the emulation done through X calls over the
   network?

I hope the question is clear. I hope, at the same time, that someone can give me
an answer...

Thanks a lot,

Matteo Carcano
(Tech.ACT, Milan)

P.S.
More generally speaking, the problem of the capacity planning is one of the
biggest, especially now that the X terminals are available.
Is there any documentation, example, guideline...whatever, that can help in
this direction? Even more, is there a support group or a person I can refer
to whenever this kind of problem come out? If you can point me somewhere
I'd really appreciate. It's something, as you know, that is becoming a MUST
in order to keep selling our products.
Thanks again!
