2015.0. "DECwindows Desktop Kit Locations" by VIA::SUNG (A waste is a terrible thing to mind) Tue Jan 09 1990 11:53

A prototype version of the DECwindows Desktop kit is now available.
For a brief description of what the DECwindows Desktop is and how
install it and use it on your system, refer to the file:

	REGAL::DESKTOP$KIT:$$READ_ME.FIRST

The kit is *NOT* a VMSINSTAL saveset. You should create a separate
subdirectory for the Desktop files. All Desktop files are placed in
this directory so that it does not affect your system permanently.
You can de-install this kit by simply deleting the files in this
directory.

There are 2 ways to get the kit.

	$ COPY REGAL::DESKTOP$KIT:*.*/EXCLUDE=*.BCK *

			or

	$ COPY REGAL::DESKTOP$KIT:DESKTOP-X02.BCK *
	$ BACKUP DESKTOP-X02.BCK/SAVE *

The intent of this prototype release is to introduce the diverse
variety of computer applications users within Digital to the
look-and-feel of the proposed DECwindows Desktop enviroment.
DECwindows Desktop is a user environment designed to be the one
environment of its kind for Digital- and Digital ISV-developed
applications, suitable for all application areas and all levels of
user experience. As such, the desktop team requires feedback from all
types of end-users, from the most technically oriented to the most
business oriented. After you have a feel for Desktop, please provide
the Desktop team with your feedback by posting your comments to our
notesfile on REGAL::DECW$DESKTOP.

A couple of questions:
Does this conflict or complement the Motif look-and-feel?

Is there any relation to Desktop VMS, requiring a cd, etc?

> A couple of questions:

     It is (will be) a Motif (toolkit, look and feel...) application.

> Is there any relation to Desktop VMS, requiring a cd, etc?

     No relation to Desktop VMS.

Again, this questions should be asked in REGAL::DECW$DESKTOP notes file.

Thanks,

     < ANNOUNCING THE RELEASE OF DECWINDOWS DESKTOP DEMO X03 >

	The Desktop team is pleased to announce the release of the
	DECwindows Desktop Demo X03. The primary advance that this
	baselevel represents is equivalent functionality on RISC
	Ultrix and VMS, including a number of new features beyond
	those of VMS X02.

Highlights of this release above X02 are:

o equivalent functionality on RISC Ultrix and VMS

o FILE MANIPULATIONS (delete, move and copy) ARE NO LONGER DISABLED.
	When you delete a file it is moved to a directory called
	wastebasket.

o view file compatibility and loading
	The same DESKTOP.VIEW (object and method definition) file can be used
	on both VMS and Ultrix. Customized view files can be loaded during
	a desktop session.

o autopoll
	Automatic polling for update of information in blotters can be
	applied at a settable interval.

Instructions for installing the latest version of the demo software follow.
Release notes are in the file REGAL::DESKTOP$KIT:AAA_DESKTOP.TXT.

Create a directory for your Desktop files. From that area:

$ COPY REGAL::DESKTOP$KIT:DESKTOP-X03.BCK *
$ BACKUP DESKTOP-X03.BCK/SAVE []*.*
To run Desktop on your filesystem, type @RUN_DESKTOP.

(If you have a 4-plane color system, answer "no" when you are asked
if you have a color system.)

RISC ULTRIX
Create a directory for your Desktop files and cd to that area.
To obtain the files type the following commands (use exactly
the quotes and capitalization used here):

% uncompress desktopx03_tar
% tar xf desktopx03_tar

If the workstation you are displaying on is a monochrome or 4-plane
color system, type the following command:
% cp bw.desktop ~/.Desktop

If your workstation is an 8-plane color system, type
% cp color.desktop ~/.Desktop

To run Desktop on your filesystem, from csh type
% <directory-path>/run_desktop.unix

If you wish, you can also copy the following objects to your ~ directory.
% cp inbox.destkop ~
% cp lp0.printer  ~
