Hello everybody,

I guess this topic was discussed before, but I didn't find any
    reference. My situation is :

We have a costumer that have a development team with 12 programmers
using actually 1 VS2000 (6MB of memory with VWS/VMS) each. The
tipical workload is VAXset and cobol compiler running locally in the
vaxstation. These VS2000 are connected through a MI Cluster.

They are interested in decwindows, and we want to replace their VS2000
by VS3100, then I need to justify this replacement . My questions are
    :

1. Until when your software VWS will be supported ?
    2. If I expand the memory of those VS2000 to 14 MB and replace VWS by
DECwindows, can they achieve similar performance with the same
    workload ?

Thanks in advance for any comments/sugestions,
Josmar Ribeiro

In case your interested, the VS3100 supports VWS on the mono and GPX
    versions.

Also, adding 14Mb to the VS2000 will result in a machine that run
DECwindows quite well, though obviously it won't be as fast as a
    VS3100.

What's the cost of a VS3100 with the VS2000 trade-in program?
What's the cost of a VS2000 12 Mb board?

o The performance of a large memory VS2000 can exceed that of a
vanilla 8mb VS3100 when running DECwindows.

o If your applications are graphic intensive on a color system, a
VS3100 may not increase performance if the bottleneck is in the
graphics. The speed of drawing is relatively the same between
      systems.

o While primitive graphic operations between UIS and DECwindows vary
from much faster under X11 to much faster under DECwindows depending
upon the combination of drawing operations and the hardware being used.
Real-life feedback indicates that many applications may suffer from
actual performance losses of up to 50% when running applications
under DECwindows from their UIS versions when using the same hardware
      configuration.

o VWS will continue to be offered for as long as there remains a demand
for the product. The actual sales of VWS remain very high and have
not dropped off as quickly as anticipated. Active development of VWS
will remain limited, the strategic direction of the company is to
      DECwindows/Motif.

o VWS will run on all VMS-based monochrome frame buffer VAXstations and
all "Dragon" (i.e. GPX-type) color VAXstations, including the VS3100
      models.

o VWS does not run on the 3520/40 (Firefox) nor are there current plans
for native support of new generation video subsystems. As always,
new hardware support will be a business decision and if sufficient
demand for VWS on new platforms warrants it, new support can and will
      be developed.

o The next release of VWS (V4.3) will contain a new runtime library:
UISX. UISX provides the UIS program interface for DECwindows/X11.
This software will allow most UIS applications to run using X11
without any change to the application or even a relink. The
extension of UIS to execute as a layered extension to DECwindows/X11
provides the ability to run on platforms not supported by native
VWS and to provide relative device independence to UIS. An
additional benefit is that UIS can run remote, using the client-
server functionality of X11. UIS applications can display on any
X11 Server capable of connecting to VMS/DECwindows. Up to 16
workstations can be driven from a single UIS virtual display allowing
multi-workstation applications to be written simply and efficiently.
UISX will allow the user to select the degree of accuracy versus the
performance of the library. UISX does NOT provide the DECwindows
look and feel, applications continue to function much like they did
under native VWS. Application startup time and memory requirements
are lower than typical DECwindows XUI-compliant applications. UISX
will run using both the DECwindows and Motif window managers.
