1986.0. "Interface Builders for DECwindows/X11/Motif..?" by ASPEN2::BOIKO (Is this Heaven..No, it's Iowa..) Tue Jan 02 1990 12:37

Currently I am looking at a 3rd party X11 interface builder offered
by the VI Corp in Amherst Ma. This tool will allow very quick
prototyping and implementation of a graphical X11 front-end for many
    different types of real-time applications.

My question is - are there any other X11/Motif/DECwindows interface
builders available, other then the one VI is currently offering? The VI
tool has been used by many companies in many different application areas
(ie. from JPL to GTE). VI's tool lets you quickly setup dynamic real-time
interfaces (there is a library of graphs which can be used and many
other pre-defined objects) which can run in an X environment.

The only other tool available similar to this, that I know of is
    NeXT's Interface Builder.

Are there any other tools like this available..?

Please check the Motif (SUBWAY::) and DWICS (CLT::) conferences.
TeleUSE has been debated extensively in these places. It is
shipping for ULTRIX now, and a VMS port is in the works.

The VI Corp. uses the X protocol only....no X intrinsics. You have
to code in their proprietary toolkit! Hey, you have to watch those
    slick sales people ;-)
Sheryll Lubinski CA has a comparable product that runs on both VMS
and ULTRIX. Not very_state_of_the_X_shelf implementation of X11.
Consult with your favorite 3rd application source for more info.
All this info is available internally if you have time to look for
    it.

Kris and I are in the same New York office:

VI Corp. offers a toolkit (DV tools) which is not object-oriented
(although they'd claim otherwise), they offer DV Draw which is a
display animator for many interesting application domains. It uses X,
but not the intrinsics. I believe it offers a fast start to a visually
    impressive application.

SL Corp. (the new name for Sherrill-Lubinsky) their philosophy is more
object-oriented ("is a part of" relationships exist, but no inheritance)
They lack a display animator as complex as VI. They have started to
map their objects to X intrinsics, their current demo ships an example
of this. I expect that SL Corp applications are more complex but more
    maintainable.

Both have relationships with Digital, you'll have to do the research
    for the details.

Sun has both these tools as well.

If you consider these to be interface builders, then you might as well
include Smalltalk, Nexpert, Objective C's object library and other
tools which build a visual interface.

Real interface builders, in my definition, work with much more
primitive elements than any of the above products, Teleuse and
Digital's program-announced VUIT, and the mysterious talked-about but
    not-released UIMX from HP qualify.
1986.3More Questions - HP's new IB...ASPEN2::BOIKOIs this Heaven..No, it's Iowa..Wed Jan 03 1990 17:3717
    Kris/Pat

Is HP's UIMX the same thing as their recently announced HP IVI/API
interface builder...and if not, what is the difference? The IVP
component of HP's IB, is really mostly GMS - licenced from SL. This
    info comes directly from SL.

After 1 week of researching available interface builders, it seems like
VI Corp's Dataviews, SL's GMS, and Telesoft's (new company name I guess)
product are the most current products available.

Once SL includes access to Motif, it will be in a much better position
to compete with Telesoft. Telesoft in comparison appears to be
relatively weak in the dynamic/real-time graphics display area, and
strong in the presentation and depth of X/Motif architecture.
