| IS your Client Serious? THey want to be able to print the whole of
the Bookreader VMS Doc Kit to their Laser Printer? Are they aware
that this is over 25,000 pages per set? Given the cost of Laser
Printer Paper (in low quantity), and the consumables (Toner etc)
that it would take to print this, let alone the time of an
individual to drive it. They would find that it would be far more
cost effective to order hardcopy documentation if that is indeed
what they want.
It was never intended that the On Line Documentation be used as a
Demand Printing environment. THis may or may not change in the
future.

He is very Serious. They will print ONLY those manualls that they want to use.
Since storage space costs a lot of money and we R talking about almost 100
copies, I think it makes it reasonable to do so.

| It's not really as reasonable as you or your customer make out.
Bookreader format has different pagelengths and fonts that would be
inappropriate for paper printing.
If the customer wants printable manual sets and is prepared to pay for
them and the media they'd come on and the consumables as detailed by
PQ, then *maybe* a deal could be struck.
Frankly, I doubt the case could be made, but escalate through to VMS
Product Management, with estimated volumes etc.
IT WOULD BE MUCH CHEAPER TO BUY VAXSTATIONS AND DECWINDOWS AND USE THE
BOOKREADER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| Or if it just one or two volumes out of the VMS Doc Kit that they
want then they will probably find that they can order those
manuals individually direct from SSB or DECDirect. I have ordered
one-of manuals of a set in the past, without any heartache.
Can you determine which manuals they want and how many?

| Remember to mention to them that they won't get double-sided
printing, hence any manual they choose to print will be twice as large
and heavy as one from SSB. Okay, maybe not exactly twice, because
laser-printer paper isn't as heavy as that used to print manuals, but
twice the pages, anyway.

The LPS20 prints on both sides. You can also print several logical pages on a
single physical sheet. So you may end up with half as many pages...

1959.8 | What about the legal side? | MAPROP::MKING | Will it fit on my desk? | Fri Dec 29 1989 12:44 | 11 |
| Since Digital holds that copyright on the VMS doc set, how does this customer
intend to pay for the reproduction of the information. If that company intends
to just print them off, this is analogous to xerographically reproducing the
manual. While the copying of documentation does happen on a small scale, the
customer is violating copyright laws of the United States. However, there is
another side to this cloud. There may still be a royalty program for the
customer to pay for the right to reproduce the copyrighted material at a reduced
cost (like maybe 25% of list) for any large quantity copies. Have the account
rep talk to the ops or licensing specialist in your geography.
