1945.0. "Can't shrink to ICON" by TLE::BEAL () Tue Dec 19 1989 14:36

I've just upgraded a VAXstation II from VMS V5.1/VWS to
VMS V5.3/DECWINDOWS V2.0. Though the upgrade seems to have
gone fine, I'm having a problem with DECWINDOWS. Specifically,
I can't shrink DECTERMs to icons, and when I use a customize
window and click the "OK" button, the window doesn't go away.
I've tried three different mice (it's the old style mouse) and
get the same behavior. Is there something that disables these
	features?

I've sucessfully installed from scratch, and upgraded to, this
version of VMS on a number of other Micro/VAX systems. if this
sounds like a bug that should be QAR'd, let me know and I'll QAR
it. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.

	Thanks,

	Steve

Can you shrink other things to icons? Is there anything generic that
you can say? For example, might it be that the mouse button is not
    being read?

Seems to me that the first place to start is to get rid of you
DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT file. I can't think of anything else that could
have this range of symptoms, although I can't think how that could make
you unable to shrink to icon either.

Nope. None of the windows will shrink to icon. The button (MB1),
works for other operations though. It works for getting input
focus to a window, to cut text in a cut-and-paste operation, etc...

Would the DECW$XDEFAULTS.DAT file be located in the SYS$LOGIN
directory? If so, their isn't one for either the user account
or the SYSTEM account (the problem occurs in both accounts).

Thanks for the ideas. If you or anyone else has any others, I'd
	really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

Can you move and resize windows? I wonder if the window manager is stuck in
the process of trying to tear down the customize dialog box. How about
creating new windows? Do the symptoms only start after the dialog box comes
up?

The symptoms appear immediately. I missed typed my password so
that the "User Authorization Failure" box came up in place of
the login box. I clicked on "Acknowledge" and that window wouldn't
go away and thus the login box wouldn't reappear.

The windows can't be re-sized or moved. Another thing is that
when I create a DECTERM, I get two of them instead of just one.

	Thanks,

	Steve
