Hi guys, Justed look thru topic 2 to see a more appropriate conference. Couldn't rightly see one so here goes. I have a customer who has a vax station 2000 which until recently was running some sort of windowing system on it. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Decwindows but it was definately X based. He recently upgraded his version of Ultrix and now the station will not bring up a windowing enviroment. At boot time everything seems to go well and proceeds up to the point where the standard X background is displayed with a movable pointer. Then the system hangs and the background continually flashes off and back on. The pointer turns back to a cursor during these flashes. According to the customer a login box was once displayed. I have taken down a copy of his ttys entry : ttyv0 "/usr/bin/xterm -l -L =80x24+195+275" xterm on secure window="/usr/bin/Xqvsm" I have checked my own system running Decwindows and found : :0 "/usr/bin/login -P /usr/bin/Xpromter -C /usr/bin/dxsession" none on secure window="/usr/bin/Xcfb" The ttys(5) entry was again different : ttyv0 "/usr/bin/xterm -L -r -i -fn 9x15 =80x24+0-0 unix:0" xterm on secure window="/usr/bin/X 0 -0 #000000 -1 #FFFFFF" I know for sure that he has "uwm" on his system but cant tell you if he has DECwindow manager. His system is monochrome. I assume he does but know for sure that he has been using "uwm" up until now. Does anyone have any clues as to what I should check on his system so as to get it going. Any help or a pointer to a conference would be dandy. Walter Zambotti.

I know beans about Ultrix, but I have found that a server which is continually flashing like that often means that something is continually trying and failing to connect to the server. When the connection is booted off, the server resets. This may be to something involving security. I don't know how all the default stuff works in Ultrix, but the xhost program may be able to help with testing. Burns

You might look at /usr/adm/X0msgs and see if there are any clues in it. Jeff
1911.3 | How to set up X ? | WPOMM2::ZAMBOTTI | Thu Dec 14 1989 20:07 | 10
Ok so mayby I can't pinpoint the problem. But there must be some kind of documentation on how to install and setup X on an Ultrix system which previously did/didn't have X. If I have that doco then maybe I should try install X from scratch. Because at the moment I just dont know where to start looking. Thanks for .1 & .2. Walter. |
