1900.0. "Looking for Good DECwindows Pictures/Graphics" by BERKLY::JOSEPH_BO (Win agreements, not arguments) Tue Dec 12 1989 14:47

Hi gang, I'm looking for some DECwindows Graphics pictures
for demoing the graphic capabilities of DECwindows. I
am at a site where SUN and NEXT Computer & APPLE have plenty
of these gimmicks and my customer is very eager to show
some of our ''gimmicks''. The customer is VERY pro-DEC and
I'd like to help him help us better expose our product lines.

Ie: Sports, Nature, Modeling figures, etc... Any ideas/suggestions
as to where I could get some of these things.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Ciao,

There are lots of such things around. Unfortunately, nearly all of them
would be inappropriate to show to customers due to subject matter and
copyright concerns. Please keep this in mind when you get offers of
files to show.

Are we saying that WE DON'T have any tools like to show to our customers?
We do not want to GIVE them to customers, we simply want to show
to customers that we at DEC also have similar ''gimmicks'' for our
    products...
You also mentioned ''copyright'', are you implying that these tools
are possibly third party products but not ours (DEC) ?

If that is the case, do we plan on having
our graphic tools in the near future? Sometimes customers are like
children, they see something from one vendor and they wonder why is
it that DEC does not have similar gadgets.

    Thanks for your quick response.

What Steve is saying is that most of the interesting images (which is what
you asked for) were created by scanning copyrighted pictures (ie: Sports
Illustrated Swim Suit Calendars). These should not be shown to customers
under any circumstances. There have been various image display programs
and sets of images discussed here and in ELKTRA::DW_EXAMPLES. You should
make VERY SURE that the images you choose to display are not copyrighted
by some third party who has not given permission to use them for promotion
of our products.

There are some files in the directory DECW$EXAMPLES ( ie, ico.exe,
plaid.exe, and decburger.exe) that can be used. Although I am not
    sure of their 'gee-whiz' value.

You can snag some .DDIF and .XBM files from ASD::DECW$PICS:*.XBM and
    *.DDIF

Please check to be sure the images you plan to show are not
    copyrighted..

The VAXimage Scan V2.0 kit (ISA020) has a few "example" images - at least
two of which are decent color ones (a shot of a suspension bridge and a nice
pro football picture. I assume since they're on the kit that there are no
copyright problems.

The folks at the ACTs seem to have some goodies if you talk nicely. There is
a general dearth of snazzy stuff for VAXstations compared with what I have
seen on the RISC machines.

You are right on the money that these things are needed as a door-opener to
"prove" that our workstations are competitive. Many years ago a former HP
rep told me that HP emphasiszed graphics demos to their sales reps because
"it won't sell a system, but it will get their attention".

Good Luck.

How do you view these files? I get a "DDIF unsupported format" error
    with the CDA Viewer.

You can view the .DDIF files with the CDA Viewer! Probably the DDIF
semantics got lost during the copy. Apply $SET FILE/SEMANTIC=DDIF to
    the .DDIF files.

DECW$PAINT will view both .DDIF and .XBM files and will allow you to
    convert them as well.

Is this a message from DECW$PAINT? Which file are you getting it on?

If it's not when using paint - try using it...
