1896.0. "Clipboard private id?" by EXLIB::DLUGOSZ (Open foot, Insert Mouth) Mon Dec 11 1989 17:39

What is the private_id passed in many of the clipboard routines
and what might it realistically be used for. The description
provided in the documentation is not the most revealing.

The private_id is information the application wants to store with the
data. It can be anything the application wants to store there. (This
is like the tag information in widget callbacks). The private_id is
returned from to the application when it calls CopyFromClipboard or
(indirectly in a data structure) when it calls ListPendingItems. I
really don't know to what use existing applications have put this
capability. If you can't think of anything to do with it, then you
    probably don't need it.

Thanks. That will at least tell me what it is which is 100%
better than what I found in the manuals!

Unfortunately for an instructor teaching DECwindows, the ISVs in
the class expect you to have an answer to just about any question
that they can dream up (including why did they design it this way
instead of that way - I just love that one. Hey Jim, did you know
that I should be able to read your mind?). It's one of those funny
feeling that you get - you know that if you don't have an answer for
    it they'll ask about it!
