DECW$TAILOR OFF wording is ambiguous and/or contradictory.
I just finished upgrading to VMS 5.3 and had no problem using
VMSTAILOR other than understanding the use of the terms "ON"
and "OFF" ("add" and "remove" would have been much clearer
and I find it hard to believe "ON" and "OFF" were approved?).
Once I understood that I needed to specify OFF to remove optional
VMS files it was straight forward selecting the ones I wanted
removed. However, when I then went to use DECW$TAILOR to remove
some, but not all, optional VMS DECwindow's files I was left
confused and unwilling to remove any until I get a clarification
of the wording being used by DECW$TAILOR to select files to be
removed. (I've spent enough time loading 5.3 from TK-50s all ready!)
With VMSTAILOR you are always selecting things you want to remove.
DECW$TAILOR on the other hand uses wording that implies you are to
select things you want to keep (use) for certain categories and remove
for others. And then at the end asks you to confirm that you want to
remove EVERY thing you have selected (without a list to base the
confirmation on). So I am left with the impression the wording is
ambiguous and contradictory, if not outright incorrect.
What's the story here, i.e., how should I interpret the wording?

I don't understand your comment that VMSTAILOR and DECW$TAILOR vary in the messages when tailoring off files. One being clear that you are tailoring off while the other confuses which you are doing. They are basically identical utilities. If you could be more specific to the areas you commented on, we will gladly look into them. I agree that the "ON" and "OFF" could/should be replaced with something like ADD and REMOVE. We will surely be looking at this when enhancements to this utility are made. -Ron

I didn't mean to imply that it was confusing whether you were tailoring things
on or off, i.e., it was clear that it would be tailoring things off when off
was selected. What was confusing was what exactly would (or wouldn't) be
tailored off. For example;
CLASS - DECwindows device support files
Size of entire class (with subclasses): 3908
Size of common files required for any subclass: 1887
Do you wish to select the entire class (default = NO)?
Do you wish to select any of its subclasses (default = NO)? y
Select the subclasses that you wish to use:
SUBCLASS - PEX for PHIGS support files (2021 blocks) [NO]: y
and
CLASS - DECwindows programming support files
Size of entire class (with subclasses): 23475
Size of common files required for any subclass: 1777
Do you wish to select the entire class (default = NO)?
Do you wish to select any of its subclasses (default = NO)? y
Select the subclasses that you wish to use:
SUBCLASS - Ada files (3287 blocks) [NO]:
SUBCLASS - BASIC files (2028 blocks) [NO]:
SUBCLASS - BLISS files (1642 blocks) [NO]:
SUBCLASS - VAX C (MIT binding) files (1090 blocks) [NO]: y
SUBCLASS - VAX C (VAX binding) files (1807 blocks) [NO]: y
SUBCLASS - FORTRAN files (1603 blocks) [NO]:
SUBCLASS - Macro files (3194 blocks) [NO]:
SUBCLASS - Pascal files (4577 blocks) [NO]:
SUBCLASS - PL/I files (2470 blocks) [NO]:
Files have been selected
Do you wish to remove all of the options selected?
At this point I am confused. I've selected "PEX" and "VAX C" because I "wish to
use" them, not because I "wish to remove" them. The VMSTAILOR wording is not
ambiguous, i.e., you "select the subclasses that you wish to remove", not
"select the subclasses that you wish to use".
I know I could determine experimentally what is really meant. But I don't feel
like having to tailor back on from a TK-50!

I see your point. I will look into seeing what might "easily" be done at this time to clarify this better. All I can say for now is that whatever you select is associated with the option of tailoring on or off. In otherwords, if you select to tailor "off" then all "YES" replies indicate classes and/or subclasses that will be deleted. Thanks for providing more info. -Ron

I remember submitting a QAR on that for V5.0. It's disgusting to see that the wording is still broken. paul
