1886.0. "VMSv5.3/DECW VS2000 Install problem" by TOWNS::WURZBERGER (Ron Wurzberger) Mon Dec 11 1989 10:21

    	I have a VAXstation 2000 with 4Mb of memory on which I am trying to
    install VMS V5.3 and DECWindows. The actual installation of the
    software was successful and DECWindows does come up. However, after
    entering a user name and password, a window appears informing me of an
    error encountered by the system...

    	OPCODE reserved to DIGITAL fault at PC=000B70CE PSL=03C00000

    and after I acknowlege the error the system hangs. I have tried
    reinstalling DECWindows under the assumption that perhaps the initial
    installation had been invalid in some way. CSC was unable to identify
    the cause of the problem and suggested it was due to a hardware fault.
    I installed VWS V4.2 and booted the system. Everything seems to run
    fine under VWS which leads me to believe that the fault lies within
    DECWindows software. Is the fault mentioned above due to a lack of
    physical memory - does DECWindows have minimum requirement to run?
    (Realizing of course, that with only 4Mb of memory DECWindows would
    never run well.)

You should not get an error like that from lack of memory.

Take a look in your login directory and see if you have a file called
DECW$SM.LOG. This might contain clues which could be entered in a QAR.

Thanks,

1886.2Error info found - maybe.TOWNS::WURZBERGERRon WurzbergerThu Dec 14 1989 11:478
    	I could not find a file called DECW$SM.LOG, but did find a file
    called DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG. This file contained a transicript of
    sorts reqarding activity the server was engaged in. The only entry
    that seemed to be error related stated that an error was encountered
    when it was found that a logical "DECW$MONITOR_DENSITY" was not defined.
    This was the last entry in the file. Any ideas?

1886.3Doubtful DECW$MONITOR_DENSITY is your problemSTAR::VATNEPeter Vatne, VMS DevelopmentThu Dec 14 1989 17:105
I don't think that the DECW$MONITOR_DENSITY error message is your problem.
However, it is *extremely* hard to tell what is going on without seeing
the log file itself. Please post the entire contents of the log file.

Are you sure you don't have a SYS$MANAGER:DECW$SM.LOG?
1886.4DECWIN::FISHERBurns Fisher 381-1466, ZKO3-4/W23Fri Dec 15 1989 09:314
Actually, that would be SYS$LOGIN:DECW$SM.LOG, (not SYS$MANAGER, unless the
problem happened when logging in as SYSTEM)

    	Given that my system checked out okay when running VWS, I went with
    the assumption that my VMS/DECW kit was faulty. I acquired another kit
    and reinstalled both VMS and DECW. The system now boots as expected.
    Thanks for the help.
