1853.0. "Understanding Autostart / Application startup - and how best to customise it" by GALVIA::MCNELIS (Paul Mc Nelis) Wed Dec 06 1989 06:17
I've been using Autostart and Application definitions for quite a while now, and
I've found it very useful.
However, I'm now getting to the point where I want to do a bit more than just
start an application. I'd like to be able to change the process name, predict
and alter what privs and quotas the process has, and other things like that.
To do that, I need a description of the Application Startup (and hence
Autostart) mechanism. I need to know how the process is created, with what
privs and quotas, what logicals are likely to be defined, is the LOGIN.COM
executed,... the list goes on and on.
This is prompted mostly by some problems I've been having with Autostarting
Banner, which are described in notes 1609.18-.21. All I really want is to
understand why things are working the way they appear to.
I looked up this information in the latest version of the V2.0 docs that are
available to me, and couldn't find anything on this - all it tells me is how
I can change the command passed to the new process. Information of this sort
(i.e. the mechanism used to implement Application Startup) is of much interest
to the experienced VMS user, and should be somewhere in the Doc Set.
Comments? Information? A complete description of the Autostart mechanism,
anyone??? ;-)

| See my reply in 1609.23 which covers a little, but not all, of what you
are asking. I didn't get to this note until after posting the other
reply.
