Is there a way install DECwindows (V1.0 - the one that comes bundled
with VMS 5.2) *without* re-installing VMS 5.2? Weird question?
Consider the following:
Customer installs VMS 5.2 on a virgin system and says "no" to the
question about installing DECwindows. He later decides that he
indeed really needs it and tries to do a VMSINSTAL DECW052 from the
tape media. Which he can't because there is no DECW052.* on
the first tape of the distribution media and the second tape
(w/ standalone backup and DECwindows) doesn't have a DECW052.A
saveset. The only 'supported' method of getting this installed
seemed to be to perform the *painful* task of performing an
UPGRADE. The Installation and Upgrade Guide doesn't even mention
how to install DECwindows separately and there is nothing to warn
you that you will have to perform an upgrade if you *forget* to
install DECwindows...
This didn't seem to bother the customer too much, as long as it
works, but is there another method? It would seem to me to be
a MAJOR oversight if you are not able to re-install DECwindows
without installing all of VMS. What about large clusters that
suddenly want to become LAVCs? Why the change from VMS 5.1 where
DECwindows was it's own saveset?

As documented on pages 3-4 and 8-8 of the v5.2 Upgrade and Installation Procedures manual, run SYS$UPDATE:DECW$TAILOR.EXE. To install DECwindows you will have to have the distribution media available. Susan

To install DECwindows you >will have to have the distribution media available. Sure enough, buried in the section labelled "Removing Unwanted Files" they tell you about DECW$TAILOR. That is certainly where *I* would look when I want to find out about how to ADD files to the system. :-} There is also a one-liner on page 2-9 that says: You can provide DECwindows support now, or you can use the DECW$TAILOR utility to provide or remove DECwindows support after the installation. Now that I know what to look for, I can find all the information I want. I would suggest two things: o the installation itself tell the person that "If you don't add DECwindows NOW, you will have to run DECW$TAILOR later to add the files. See section blah" o there be a separate section entitle "Adding Needed Files or Installing DECwindows After the initial installation" I don't believe that the documentation is adquate, especially the since the method of installing DECwindows has changed so dramatically from one release of VMS to another. It seems that this should EMPHASIZED as a DIFFERENCE between this version and earlier versions of DECwindows. My 2... 'Nuff said... Rick
