    I realize that this has probably been addressed in this notes files multiple
    times, but...
    
    I have seen many workstations where both the root and pause windows have
    been modified.
    
    Could someone please point me to the utility or utilities that allow this
    modification.  I am using a DECstation 2100 running UWS(RISC) V2.1.  If the 
    utilities are not available is the source for the utilities that are around
    available.
    
    Also does someone have a supply of backgrounds that I could copy???

    The programs to do this are posted in the ELKTRA::DW_EXAMPLES conference.
    I'm at home right now, so I can't easily do a DIR on that conference for
    you.  Some of the names that I recall contain "setroot", "fish", and
    "aquarium".  Try doing a DIR/TITLE= on these.  There are probably others
    there too.

Also look for ROOT.EXE.  I think it is described in this conferences
though it may also be in DW_EXAMPLES.

    .0 is running Ultrix. Root.exe is not option there.
    
    I have been going through DW_examples a few times. None
    of the programs from there, that work ok with VMS Pause
    window, seem to find Ultrix SM pause window (i have tried
    several of them).
    
    Root window customation is easy, though. There are lots
    of programs for that.

    Take a look at MPGS::VMS$Kits:<Decw.Util>XSetRoot.C, I use it to load my
    root and pause windows from .XBM files.

    with uws 2.2 bl7 (I think) it is now possible to set your login and pause
    windows to use a Postscript program.

...the previous replies have all been helpful, but they didn't work for me.

I had a couple of utilities (xgif, xsetroot) that used to place images on
my pause window that stopped working when I upgraded to Ultrix V4 and DECwindows
V2.

The suggestion in reply .5 for xsetroot generates the following errors now:

X Protocol error detected by server:  BadDrawable - parameter not a Pixmap or Wi
ndow
  Failed request major op code 53 (X_CreatePixmap)
  Failed request minor op code 0 (if applicable)
  ResourceID 0x0 in failed request (if applicable)
  Serial number of failed request 298
  Current serial number in output stream 309

XGIF used to place images on the pause window: now it hangs and nothing happens.

Has anyone else encountered this? Does anyone know any workarounds?
All help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
