| The amount of disk required for for VMS, is very much affected
by the space taken for pagefile, swapfile and dumpfile.
But given the defaults, and a 16MB+ system, more that 75 MB
for VMS and DECwindows, sounds about normal to me.
If you want to check do $purge and $anal/disk/rep to the system disk.

p.s. If you want to conserve disk space don't install the whole
decwindows kit.

| As .3 says, the amount of memory on the system makes a difference.
But, in general, there isn't too much room left on an RZ23. Most
systems have two, minimum.
Clarifications to .2
> has a minimal prebuilt VMS...
The VMS is actually a full VMS system, pre-configured to force the
customer through some installation dialogue at first power-up time.
At the request of VMS Product Management (through the MV3100 product
phase review) the MV3100 has full DECwindows installed. This can be
de-installed as required using the tailoring dialogue DECW$TAILOR.COM.

Factory Installed Software (FIS) is a worldwide program in
manufacturing, controlled for new products (like MV3100) through the
product phase review process, involving VMS, SSB, etc. For some
existing products in Europe, there's a steering team coordinating FIS
on low-end and high-end products in cooperation with European Customer
Services and ESSB. There's no intention to conflict with the
corporate CD-ROM strategy - FIS gives some complementary features in
the area of first-time installation.
Customers using FIS systems still have to buy distribution kits, though
they may be able to reduce the number of kits bought.
MV3100 ships from Ayr in Scotland, Westfield in the US, and there are
plans to ship from Kanata in Canada also.
The contents of FIS software configurations are described to the
customer (for European systems, anyway) on an A4-size customer
information sheet. Tailoring, backup and other options are described
in the power-on dialogue and in the system documentation.
There's also a feedback questionnaire which customers or DEC
installation engineers can return, to show comments. Most feedback
has been positive, though there has been some comment on loading
DECwindows onto MicroVAX systems. Current policy is that it makes
sense to do this - tailoring off is faster than trying to "tailor
on" later from distribution kits.
FIS has been discussed in two or three notes conferences (VMSNOTES,
European Installation Quality, etc). There'll be a European Sales
Update article shortly.
I'll be happy to respond further on FIS if required, but I don't
monitor this conference regularly (my DECwindows workstation works
fine!). Please mail me copies, if you add comments on FIS here.

VMS FIS also comes on VAX 6xxx from Galway, Ireland, VS31xx from Ayr,
and MV2000 from Ayr, (if there's a disk large enough to hold it - small
paging disks are excluded). There are plans to ship VS31xx from
Valbonne in France, soon.
Galway ships software pre-installed on a custom basis, on other
high-end systems, if they're part of large orders.
