1681.0. "Scaling in PAINT degrades image quality" by CSC32::T_LONGBOTHAM (Clatu berrada nictu, Gort!) Mon Nov 06 1989 16:06

    	Hi,

When scaling a picture under the EDIT menu option of
the PAINT application under V1.0 and V2.0 of decwindows
the resolution is significantly reduced when reducing the
size of the image. Why is this and will the issue be
addressed in a future release of DECWINDOWS?

    					Thanks in advance,
    					-Tom

I don't see how you can possibly avoid it. If I take an image that is, say,
200x200 pixels square, and reduce it to a size of 100x100 pixels square, I have
to throw out half the pixels in each dimension in order to display the image.
I end up keeping only one out of every 4 pixels.

Remember that PAINT is *defined* to be a BIT editor. It creates things as
objects, but it does not remember them that way...it only stores them as bits.
Thus when you scale, it no longer remembers anything with any better resolution
that the pixels that it originally wrote.

If you want object editing, try DECwrite!
