1659.0. "DECwindows login and UAF flags" by KERNEL::WOOD (Richard Wood - UK Workstation Support) Thu Nov 02 1989 13:27

    Hi,

I have a couple of queries regarding the DECwindow login mechanism
brought to my attention by a customer.

    1) If the UAF flag DISFORCE_PWD_CHANGE is set and your password
expires, on an ordinary terminal(DECnet), you get the message :-
'Your password has expired, please update immediately with
SET PASSWORD', wheras DECwindows forces a password change.
ie. In DECwindows this flag would appear to have no effect.

    2) While logging in to DECwindows, you are as explained in (1)
forced to change your password before proceeding, while doing
this, if an attempt is made to login on a terminal, VMS lets
you in, giving accounting details, new mail count etc. but
    then just hangs.

If you are in the process of changing your password on a
TERMINAL however, the other login attempt returns the
message 'Your password has expired - contact system manager'.

It seems that DECwindows is locking the UAF record while you
change the password, is this correct behaviour ?

    3) Creating a DECterm from the session manager changes
the UAF 'last non-interactive login' time, while DECterm
    IS an INTERACTIVE session.

Hope I've explained these queries properly. Can anybody
tell me if and why this is expected behaviour.

    much obliged

I have now reproduced the same problems on VMS V5.3-48F (V2 DECW).
Can anybody shed any light on them.

Thanks in advance

yes, DECwindows works differently than the a terminal login with
regards to this flag. There is no DECwindows interface to set
password, or I should say, you cannot pick it from any menu. So to
tell users to change their password, but not have a means other than a
DECterm to enter the command, did not seem the correct implementation.
For now, you must change your password from the login screen. Perhaps
this will change when and if we have a DECwindows interface to the set
    password DCL command.

yes, this is a known problem which will be fixed in a future
release of DECwindows. It has to do with the routines which the
DECwindows login interface use to access the UAF record.

This is the first I have heard of this problem. Please enter a QAR
and I will look into the problem.
