1620.0. "DECwindows perf over WANs" by SNOC02::ROSIC () Tue Oct 24 1989 20:04

    This note is a follow-on to note #718. Many customers are asking how
    will/does DECwindows work over a WAN (router based network) or a EXTENDED
    LAN (Translan based network ). Any indicative figures or experience in
    this area would be appreciated. If there isn't any figures available,
    are we Digital exploring this area (or what do we tell the paying
    public?).

    Regards,
    Michael Rosic.

    (PS. Q are you still around?)

       	What is the speed of the WAN lines? How are they being used now?
       	Are they busy?

       	Q is up here in ZK now. Send mail to STAR::QUODLING.

1620.2Speed=48K with LAT & DECnetSNOC02::ROSICWed Oct 25 1989 05:449
    Thanks for your speedy reply, Mike. The lines are currently 48 Kbps and
    are being used for LAT and DECnet (ie, Translan based). Have no real
    traffic figures available but the customer would like
    loading/utilisation of such a link in a typical DEwindows application
    (if there is such a beast), say DECwrite. The customers has several
    remote sites connected to a central cluster.

    Michael.

	Well, you could try it.. with a 48kb line, I'd say you'd get semi-
	acceptable performance but it's hard to say cuz of the utilization
	of the line.. I certainly wouldn't want to see 3-5 DECwrite sessions
	going on at the same time! :-)

	My advice is to try it but tell the customer not to expect stellar
	performance.
