1608.0. "Engineering Drawing and DECwindow " by HSOMAI::LIN () Thu Oct 19 1989 22:49

Currently, I am involved in a Engineering Drawing Library System Project.
The project will provide a central storage of engineering drawings in some
format. Any user from any workstation can access, display, and modify
these drawings.

DECwindow is puposed and a VAX 8974 Cluseter running VMS is identified to be
the client. The possible workstations(servers) are SUN, APOLLO, PC, MAC, and
not-identified others. The TCP/IP transport is purposed for the client/server
communication.

Some of drawings are already existed in bitmap, HP???, or CALCOM format.

Questions:

  1. Can I display bitmap, HP???, or CALCOM formatted file in DECwindow?
Or is there a tool to convert these formats into some format(DDIF?) that
DECwindow can display? How about modifying them after displaying?

  2. Can I port DEC X11R3 or X11R4 server software to SUN, APOLLO, PC, and MAC
workstation running UNIX. Any modifications are needed? How difficult
are they? Do we license X11R3 to these workstations? Or can MIT X11R3 or
X11R4 be used in this case? How can I get a copy of it?

  3. I know I need either wait for future version of VMS/ULTRIX Connection
software or get a ULTRIX machine running ULTRIX/DECnet acting as a
bridge between my VMS client and the UNIX servers.
How is the performance different between these two approaches?
When we expect that DECwindow and VMS/Ultrix Connection supports
     TCP/IP transport.

Please point me to any notes where these matters were already discussed.
  Thanks.

You don't need to do this because there should already be X servers
available for these platforms. Apple has a product called MacX that is
an MIT X11R3 compatible server. Digital provides PCSA for DOS-based PC's
and it includes an X server. Sun has an X server for their workstations.
You will have to do some testing to validate that all these systems will
interoperate, but theoretically if they are based on MIT X11R3 or later
    this should work.

      3. I know I need either wait for future version of VMS/ULTRIX Connection
software or get a ULTRIX machine running ULTRIX/DECnet acting as a

         TCP/IP transport.

VMS V5.3 will provide DECwindows support for TCP/IP transport using
    the VMS/Ultrix Connection (UCX) product.
