1585.0. "Mouse protocol" by MINNY::SCHWARZR () Wed Oct 18 1989 05:31

In a trading room environment, we need an interface box between the keyboard and
the mouse on one side, and the VAXstation and a video system on the other side.

Has the Mouse Protocol on the VS3100 become a DEC standard? Is information
about the protocol available?

You can look in the VCB02 technical manual. It is the same protocol that
    is used on the VSII/GPX,VS2000.VS3500,VS3100,VS3520.

re: video systems in trading rooms

Trading rooms typically have screen with direct video input going to
each desk. The control associating the video input side of the switch
from information vendors and the video output side of the switch to the
desks is typically an asynch RS-232 line employing a simple protocol.

The information is regarded as "video" because the information provider
does not allow the customer to interface to the incoming telephone line
nor is documentation provided. The customers access to the information
is the video (VT100-quality signal) coming out of a black box.

If this sounds bizzarre, you are correct. All new market data systems
provide access to the data and appropriate documentation.

    re: mouse protocol

Besides the mouse protocol, which as I understand is not documented,
you'd have to modify or rewrite drivers to accomodate what ever new
functions you want to assign to the mouse. But since the mouse is
always "online" and all the "output" created by the mouse is meaningful
to X, what new functions could you assign to the mouse that wouldn't
conflict in a major way with X?

    re: support

In Zurich, you should have the support of CSS and the DCC in London for
    Finance for trading room applications.

I'm in New York in the DCC for Finance here, although I work with the
local account reps on Union Bank of Switzerland, Swiss Bank
    Corporation, and Credit Suisse/First Boston.
