1563.0. "Process Swap Out Bug?" by SNELL::DAVIES (The Rich Tapestry of Life is Fraying...) Thu Oct 12 1989 19:08
Something happened this morning which may be a bug....
EQUIPMENT: VAXstationII/GPX, 16MB memory,3 RD54 discs.
S/W: VMS 5.1 with DECwindows
Sub processes spawned: Clock,Calendar,Bookreader with open book,DECwrite with
object window,2 terminal windows one with an EMACS sub process.
DECwindows was paused last night so that I just needed to type in the password
to get everything back. HOWEVER, instead of coming up with a lovely white screen
I saw lots of windows without the sidebars or topbars that were frozen and were
old images from the iconized subprocesses. Typing in my password did no good.
Accessing through the network, I saw that my main process was swapped out. After
stopping some of the subprocesses I sent REPLY to it which swapped it back in
again and brought its window into focus. I was then able to logout and quit
then log back in again.
Question: Is it a bug that when memory gets tight, the main process that seems
to run everything gets swapped out and locks things up (or loses track of what's
happening)? Without the network I would have needed to re-boot.

| Your description sounds like what happens when the window manager dies.
