1543.0. "Can I disable the ability to pause a session?" by DNEAST::BOTTOM_DAVID (Rock and Roll doctor) Thu Oct 05 1989 14:59

I'm looking for a way to disable the pause feature for a public GPX that will
be LACV's here at ASO, we don;t want people to pause and walk away and forget
about it, locking the workstation up until one of us sysmgr types notices and
kills their process.

Can it be done and if so please tell me how

So you want them to leave themselves logged in with an unprotected terminal,
so anyone can walk up and do all sorts of nefarious damage? Doesn't
sound like an improvement to me.

re. .1 I think like you..

re. .0 but if you want that, try

    	UAF> mod/nopass user

then ... pause still work, but ANY PASSWORD resume the session.

Here is something else you can do/try:

Add the following line to your XDefaults file:

	*PauseButton.sensitive: False

This will prevent the user from even selecting the pause feature.

To address the other issue, I think what .0 was getting at is that the
workstation in question is to be used as a 'common user' terminal...not just
for the use of a single individual.

Preventing a user of this workstation from using the Pause feature will keep
that person from logging in, pausing the session, and then walking away for a
long period of time preventing other people from using the workstation.

Security is only as good as the individual. It is each individual's
responsibility not to just walk away from a terminal leaving it logged in.
Monitoring tools can only help just so much.

  Ok...I'm off my soapbox now...

re: .1, .3 The goal is to disable the ability to pause sessions on a public
workstation so that people don't pause, go to lunch, forget they're logged in
on the workstation keeping others from being able to use it. Anyone who leaves
it logged in/not paused will have their account disusered by me if I catch them.

re: .2 thanks
