1533.0. "2nd Display Issues" by DUB02::ESBECK (Dec Van Esbeck) Thu Oct 05 1989 05:46

At present a client of significant potential wishes to use a single
VAXstation for evaluation purposes. The application requirements are
outlined below. The two principle requirements (in other words, my
questions) relate to a) attatching a second monitor to a VAXstation. I
can find nothing in the DECWindows dosumentation about this, but I know
	it can be done.

	1) How is this acheieved? I assume it is connected to the serial port.
Can I run DECWindows on both Displays simultaneously? What is the
easiest way to switch keyborad and mouse control to the second monitor?

The system will consist of a graphics workstation (VAXstation
3100 with 19inch colour monitor) and one or more mono graphics
terminals (VT330 or a 2nd 19inch monitor) connected to it.
Functionally the system will have at three components:

        o	Operator Control Window (OCW)
        o	Map Window
        o	Database Window

Each component will be controlled by a seperate process. The Map
window will use a full workstation monitor, however the other
components can output to VT windows on a second VAXstation
monitor, or they can output to two VT340 terminals. The license is a
restriction here if I use two VTs and connectivity is a further issue
since the license is 1-2 users and there is only 1 serial port.

All windows and output devices will be controlled by a single
        keyboard and mouse.

Input from the keyboard will be directed to the OCW by default,
however function keys will be defined to allow keyboard input
(and mouse input where appropriate) to be directed to the other
windows in the system. A status line on the OCW screen will show
which window is currently connected to the keyboard.

        Thanks for advice

	Declan

Please send me mail or give me a call. I work in Workstation Base Product
Marketing and am going through an exercise to justify building support
into our products for just the configuration that you are looking for.

BTW. DECwindows V2 could support this configuration on a VAXstation 3100
system, if we can convince product managment to qualify a cheap cable
that allows you to do this. I'm running this configuration on my systme
right now, so I know it works.
