1495.0. "New to VAXstation 3100" by FDCV06::ARVIDSON (What does God need with a Starship?) Wed Sep 27 1989 18:24

Now that I've received a VAXstation 3100, what can I do with
it while I wait for a boot node? The paperwork states that I
	got a 'VS3100 16MB 1PL KERNAL VMS' w/2 'RZ23 104MB DISK FACTORY'.

What I've heard is, "It's useless until you get a boot node."

Is this true? Can it be used as a dumb terminal until I get
a boot node? How about the modem port?

Also, the documentation we received pertains to the hardware
only, where do I get documentation on software? ...or does it
come with the software when we buy it.

Also, if I'm in the wrong conference for these questions or
this has been asked, please point me in the right direction...

	Thanks,
	Dan

I would suggest the TURRIS::MICROVAX conference as the best place
to ask. Press KP7 to add it to your notebook.

With the system that you have (2 RZ23s) you can do quite a bit. I have
    a VAXstation 3100 with:

    	VMS V5.2
    	DECwindows V2FT1
    	DECdecision
    	DECWrite
    	DECalc
    	LPS40 software
    	DECserver 200 software
    	EMACS
    	DECspell

and probably a couple of things I forgot. You'll have to tailor off
the programming support (discussed in the VMS documentation), have no
dump file, and put only a minimum pagefile on the system disk. the
other disk can be used for the secondary page file, and of course your
    user stuff.

It's easy, but you do need a TK50Z to get started, but you may be able
to borrow one of those from someone in the office for a day or so.

Or, if you haven't the time to mess around with VMS, downline load
yourself a VAXELN DECwindows server, start a remote DECterm (or even a
remote VMS session manager) and you're all set. You don't even have to
fool with the RZ23's -- since you have a ton of memory, your fonts can
    be loaded right into memory.

Thanks for the replies...I'll check in TURRIS::MICROVAX, too.

It seems you both, .2 and .3, are confirming that with no expansion
box(TK50Z, RRD40) and no boot node it means that I can't do didley.
A 3100 out of the box can't even act as a dumb terminal.

Based on .2 and .3 it sounds like I should check around for an
expansion box with which to load up my VAXstation.

DECterm allows me to use the modem port?

I don't know how you draw that conclusion from .2 and .3 thay both
    indicate that it is useable.

    I'm typing this on a 8mb PVx with 2 RZ23's running VMS V5.2, VWS V4.2
and DECwindows V1.0. I even have all the programming support files
that I need for VAXC development along with the Bliss compiler. And
my second disk is pretty much only user files and a partial result disk.
It's the system that I use by default (and I have 3 others to choose from)
-- and I usually run DECwindows on it.

Fred,

How did you get all those files onto the disks on your PVAX? Last I knew,
you either had to attach a tape drive or a CDROM reader or boot into a
cluster temporarily in order to build the system disk. Or does the PVAX
come with that stuff already on the disk?

RE: .6

Yup, but you have to hve a load device, either a TK50Z, CDROM, or
a cluster/nfs system.

RE: .4 (I think)

There is no "modem" port on the VAXstation 3100. There is only a
serial line, which if coaxed in the right direction, can be used with
a modem. But, there are no modem control signals, so things can be
a little strange.

There is also RSM (if I remember the TLA correctly) which is I remember
correctly downloads ELN and then pulls over a VMS system image... but
in my case I simply walked the RZ23 over to another system with a SCSI
    and did an image backup.

    re .9

RSM (Remote System Manager) is capable of intial system loads, that
is putting a configured version of VMS OR ULTRIX onto a virgin VAX
and setting up some initial conditions like the DECnet node name
and number etc as well as PAK's. RSM is also capable of installing
layered products onto remote nodes as well! Incidentally the target
machine does not have to have any tapes or CDroms for this too work
only that it be connected to the RSM host by ethernet.

But, therein lies the key -- I need a load device. I don't have one.
So, I have an office warmer until I get a boot node to load off of.

I checked out a TK50 off of a VAXstation 2000, but it was a -FA not
a -GA.

So no go, unless someone in the PKO facility can get me started :-)

Yeah, I read that elsewhere. By a little strange, I take you mean no
XON/XOFF capability?

Thanks for the replies,
Dan

Now, if this will get past the English spelling checker, we'll be all set! :-)

1495.12PRAVDA::JACKSONKing CynicThu Oct 05 1989 07:0919
RE: .11

No, it does Xon/Xoff, but it doesn't do DTR, CTS and ring detect,
so the modem control that one expects from something like a DZ11 or
terminal server isn't there.

You can still set the thing up with a serial line, and it will work, but
when you connect a modem to it, there are some gotchas.

Also, a TK50-FA can be upgraded by putting new ROMS into it, but
once it's upgraded, it can't be used on a VS2000 unless you put the old
ROMS back into it.

re: -1

Not true.

You should be able to use it on a VS2000, once it is upgraded. The only
thing is that the device ID must be a 1 on the VS2000. On the SCSI based
system (VS3100) it is recomended to be at 5.

    re .4 (and others)

If you _REALLY_ want an extremely dumb terminal...

At the console (>>>) prompt, type DTE. It stands for Dumb Terminal
Emulator. You don't get escape sequence parsing, or anything fancy
by any stretch -- we considered calling it the "Glass Teletype"
    mode for the VS3100.

Using this command, you can hook up the RS423 cable via the printer
port to something else on the other end and at least communicate.
