    Can I simply install the DECwindows bits (or decw$tailor) onto a VMS

    well....

    Sorry, you cannot use V5.2 decw$tailor to install the V5.3 DECwindows.

1470.3Where are the COMPLETE kits for V2.0 FT?TIZER::IRENEThu Sep 21 1989 09:1415

 	I am about to install DECimage FT2 but according to the IMAGING
    	Notes conference I need DECwindows V2.0 FT, "the complete kit...
    	savesets .a through .h ".

    	Can anyone tell me where I can find these kits or will the
    	savesets .c through .g mentioned in note 1470.0 be sufficient?

    	Thanks

1470.4QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centThu Sep 21 1989 09:359
    The comment in IMAGING was undoubtedly refering to IFT1 that was
    packaged separately from VMS. For FT2, DECwindows is included with
    the VMS kit the way it will be seen by customers.

    I don't know what requirements DECimage has from the VMS/DECwindows
    kit.

YO!

	Some how we keep getting left out. We have the kits.

Here is the info:

	Node:		REFINE
        Location:	DSG, Westford, MA
	Kit locations:  OPER$KITS:[VMS053]
                                  [VMS0521]
                                  [VMS052]
        DFS entry point: .ENG.LES.DSG.TASTE.OPER$KITS
	Contact:	REFINE::KIT_MANAGER

I would prefer the use of DFS since it is faster and less a drain on
our resources. FTSV is also a help. Typical DCL commands:

	COPY REFINE::OPER$KITS:[VMS053]*.* []/LOG      ! Straight network copy
			or
	COPY OPER$KITS:[VMS053]*.* []/LOG	       ! DFS entry point
			or
	FTSV COPY REFINE::OPER$KITS:[VMS053]*.* []/LOG ! FTSV network copy
		        or
	FTSV COPY OPER$KITS:[VMS053]*.* []/LOG ! FTSV w/ DFS entry point

				Hope this helps!

A customer benchmark request came in for DECwindows FT v2.0
( VMS053 ), can we support it at this time? Would I need to
have a non-disclosure signed?

Also, would anyone know if VMS053/DECW053 is compatible with
DECwrite v1.0?

Thank you.

1470.11STAR::ORGOVANVince OrgovanMon Oct 16 1989 22:146
    I suggest you discuss this with VMS DECwindows product management.
    Contact Paul Steeves at STAR::STEEVES.

    And yes, DECwrite V1.0 will run with VMS V5.3 and the version of
    DECwindows it contains.

DECwrite v1.0 is know to run and work under the current FT of VMS 5.3. AS for
full support, I think you'd need to ask the product manager of DECwrite...

	I don't think so, because the base system files supporting DEC053 are in
the VMS savesets. You have to install all of it to make it work.

What about using DECW$TAILOR.COM to tailor the decwindows files
on to the system? (if necessary you could tailor decwindows off first,
then tailor the DW053 files on).

    Some of the files are shipped with VMS.

    Speaking of upgrading...I did upgrade to VMS052 and the procedure
    told me that I can install DECW052 later on if I desired. Which I
    did.

    Next day:
    Now when I try to use VMSINSTALL it searchs for
    the DECW052.A saveset which (ofcourse) is not there.
    I alos tried using DECW052.C explicitely with the VMSINSTAL
    proc - no dice.

    Have I missed something here ?

1470.22a trial and tribulation of upgrading...bewareVAXUUM::PELTZGet used to it...Tue Oct 24 1989 12:2421
Speaking of upgrading I did upgrade to VMS T5.3 and DECwindows V2 a few weeks
ago...I meant to tell somebody about this but I forgot until just now.

I put all the VMS053 savesets on one of my disk in: dua1:[000000] and
I put the DECW053 savesets in sys$update

WHAT A MISTAKE! When the installation went to look for the decwindows
savesets it wouldn't allow me to specify anything but a disk name, and
expected the DECW053 files to be on that disk in the [000000] directory!

I then couldn't install DECwindows until after the upgrade, and then I
had to DECW$TAILOR the new decwindows onto my system...talk about being
a pain in the neck! I sure would have been nice if this little restriction
regarding the location of savesets on the disks were documented. If they
are, then they aren't in the installation guide.

Just thought you all would like to know.

Chris

1470.23I think it is documented but I am not sureTOOK::RASPUZZIMichael Raspuzzi - LAT/VMS EngineeringTue Oct 24 1989 22:1010
    I am not 100% sure, but I thought some sort of System Manager's
    documentation mentions that when doing a VMS upgrade, the kit must be
    in ddxu:[000000] (where ddxu is your favorite disk for doing upgrades).

    Since DECW053.% is part of the VMS kit, it should follow that it be in
    the same directory as VMS053.%. Of course, I could have been downing a
    few wine coolers when I thought I read this... :-)

    Gotta be in the [000000] dir.

    The install does allow for "multi-volume" kits, so you could have your
    DECW savesets on the [000000] of another disk if you wanted.

    (During my install, it came back at the DECW install part and re-asked
    me for what disk my DECW media was on, so I think you would be cool.)
