1450.0. "talent request" by LAIDBK::SCHNEIDER () Fri Sep 15 1989 16:13

I conferred with the moderator of this conference before posting
this because this is somewhat of a gray area. The field is desperately
short of delivery people to help software vendors convert applications
from other windoing systems to X. Normally it would not be kosher
to request such help in a developers conference but in light of the
all hands on DEC program, I thought it might be appropriate to see
if there were any people out there who where proficient (or on
an learning curve) for programming in X and DECWindows. This is
somewhat of a back door approach to the all hands on DEC program.
What would happen is we can discuss the projects off line and if
someone is interested we can then (assuming their manager approves)
sign them up for all hands on DEC and fly them out to (in this case
southern California) the customer site. These stays would be 'all
expenses' paid and would last usually from 2 to 8 weeks depending
on the job. This would also be a good opportunity to get some input
on how our customers are using these products as well as brush up
on your tan :-). Please contact me if you might have some time
to spare on a project like this. Currently we have one port in
    Fortran and one in C....

    thanks

What you have to do is contact your local SWS office to see if they have
the expertise. Otherwise, there is an organization that does Consulting
to help customers port their applications or create new applications. This
group only does short term (under 6 months) and usually sends one person
to the customer site for a week. Find out what they are trying to do and get
them started, then go back to the office and assist on the telephone.
Additional visits are usually once a month, every customer is different.

For more information, send me mail or call me at DTN 264-2797.

Dave,
The problem that I'm having is that we need someone on site
continuously for two months to help transfer technology and to be sure
the customer's needs are met on and on-going basis. If I am correct
your group only provides for one week a month of on site support with the
rest of the work being done remotely. Can you provide full time on site
people?

			Thanks

 Greg,

Unfortunately not. There is something called a SWS Residence that works
on-site for periods of time, but I don't have any idea how and where to find out
about these people. What we try and do is work with the local SWS person and the
customer, so the SWS person ends up being a carrier, but we also try to get them
involved for knowledge transfer reasons. If I find any info on a group that
can help for periods of time I'll let you know.

Good Luck,
	Dave

1450.4different but the same ?!?GSRC::WESTVariables don't, Constants aren'tMon Sep 25 1989 12:5120
I didn't realize there were any differences with SWS. The SWS organization
that I'm with here in Colorado Springs do just about everything. We do a
little consulting and we do residencies (on site consulting, etc). Our
residencies can be anywhere from one day to the end of a customer project. I
am currently a resident on a project. I have been on residency for over 2
and a half years now.

Now there is a Pre-Sales/Sales Support side of SWS. They primarily do demos,
talk to customers about our products to see if they will meet the customers
needs, consulting, etc. The people who do this are usually very short term.
It's like they do the initial work and then its people like me who go in for
the *long* term. We do *sometimes* work together.

Either one of these *types* of people should be to either help you directly
or a least point you to those who can.

Note 1275 discusses the general question of what services Digital
offers to customers in a DECwindows context.

In the specific case in .0, the usual steps are for the account manager
to contact the local Software Services managers.

If the local SWS managers decline to act on an opportunity, then a
general solicitation in a VAX Notes conference might offer some psychic
    relief but doesn't promise results.
