We use DECwindows applications over TransLAN bridge (one 2Mb line) and
the maximum load is about 2-3 VAXstations using mostly OOTB
applications (and maybe some DECwrite too) together with about 15-20
terminal users (ALL-IN-1). We have no problems with this configuration.
Of course You should remind Your customer that this is 'not supported'
because our configuration guide lines state that minimum line speed
should be 10Mb/s.

1432.2 | Mbyte or Mbit? Mb can mean either, these days.. | HYDRA::COAR | Nobody move or I'll shoot my foot! | Wed Sep 13 1989 13:08 | 1 |

1432.3 | There are international standards for these... | ERIS::CALLAS | The Torturer's Apprentice | Wed Sep 13 1989 13:17 | 6 |
| Uh huh, but what you're *supposed* to do is use "b" for bit and "B" for
byte. So Mb is megabit, MB is megabyte. Also, for what it's worth, mB
would be millibyte, a rather absurd quantity.

1432.4 | Absurd, yes, but not as bad as mb - millibit - or b ;-) | HYDRA::COAR | Nobody move or I'll shoot my foot! | Wed Sep 13 1989 16:56 | 1 |

Well, I guess I could repeat my previously written reply again here.
I ran for a while with my workstation connected to the network via a
64kbps synchronous DDCMP link. Performance of DECwindows applications
was acceptable, but it was appreciably slower than over ethernet.

1432.7 | 2400 baud anyone? | DECWIN::FISHER | Burns Fisher 381-1466, ZKO3-4/W23 | Tue Sep 19 1989 18:48 | 7 |
| I've tried it on 2400 baud. Gaak! Application startup takes forever.
Once they start up, it is sort of amusing. A novelty that you
could probably use to demonstrate how (flexible, wonderful, ...)
the system is, but you could not really use it for long.
