"Troy Montes/GID FLA-305-360-6517 SWS/E Networks" 6-SEP-1989 15:18 The following information is required to completed a goverment proposal. One functionality required is to file images and integrate them with WPS+, thru the use of decwindows. The documentation I have doeas not mention anything that you can integrate WPS+ documents with images filed thru VAx image scanning system. I would like to know the following: 1) the interface between VAXimage and WPS+, and between VAXinmage and RALLY. I understand that DECwindows does support VAX ADA, VAX BASIC, BLISS32 and other language, but it does not mention that support RALLy Nor WPS+. We want to make sure of integration and manepulation of images utilizing WPS+ and RALLY. (either using DECwindows or anything alse) 2) Are the images filed thru VAXimage, shearables? How is this controlled? 3) Can these files be organized and retrieved by the use of Keywords? How are they organized, to facilitate the retrieval of documents? 4) What kinf of security system does VAXimage offer for accessing image files? Your prompt response will be appreciated. saludos,

Let's make this simple. One of the truly dumb things that's been part of the ad hoc way that Personal Computing evolved over the last 10 years was the emphasis on _pair-wise_ format conversions or interfaces. As in A<->B<->C<->D. Indeed DEC has had this problem as people reduced all graphics to sixels and all text to ASCII as these seemed to be the lowest common denominator. The answer is Compound Document Architecture. CDA support is in VMS, and over time VMS layered products will include CDA support where that would be a significant benefit. My view is that CDA is a layered product issue and not a DECwindows issue. The question is not as simple as "Does VAX FOO support CDA?" The question is more like "Do VAX FOO do context-dependent correct thing when it encounters an image?" Conference pointer DDIF::CDA. | |||||

Having worked on a RALLY project involving REGIS graphics drawings, I'll try tackling the RALLY aspect of Image support. Per se, RALLY would not directly support VAX Image Services, however, in RALLY you commonly link to routines written in third generation languages such as Fortran or C. These routines would handle the Image Service stuff. We were pretty successful in mixing RALLY forms applications with REGIS graphics drawing. BTW, for most signifigant, production RALLY applications you will want to have a 3rd generation language available. Kevin |
