1375.0. "Securpack seems to kill Session Manager" by PTEVAX::PICHE () Tue Sep 05 1989 18:05

We have a small LAVc set up running VMS 5.2, DECwindows 2.0-FT1, and
Securpack 3.2. A couple of satellites boot off of a Mayfair with an
RA82. I have each satellite as well as the server start up
    Securpack when booting.

Problem: While using a DECwindows application such as DECdecision on
either VAXstation Satellite Securpack will kill the Session Manager and
    cause the satellite to hang.

What is the solution to this situation.

    Thank you
    Guy

man (holding his arm over his head): "doctor, it hurts when i do
    this."

    doctor: "don't do that."

1375.2Any fixes?PTEVAX::PICHEWed Sep 06 1989 12:0910
That's the obvious answer. We already took the doctors advise.
However, since the Digital school of medicine requires all systems to
run Securepack I was looking for a fix or work around.

1375.3Re SecurePak [sp]HYDRA::COARHave you mutated yet to-day?Wed Sep 06 1989 12:126
Actually, I think all systems have to have it installed, not necessarily have
it running. At any rate, that's how I interpreted the policy back in St Louis..
I think the wording is currently ambiguous enough for you to get away with this.

Also, the component of SECURPACK that kills the sessions is the Idle
Process Monitor, an entirely optional thing.

Besides, SECURPACK doesn't work on V5.2 or later, last I checked.

Running the Idle Process Killer is a non sequitor on a Workstation
    anyhow. Securepak runs on 5.2.

Securpack V3.3 which is going to be available next week supports
    VMS V5.2.

Actually, Securpack is not required. The Securpack guidelines say that
you shouldn't run any privileged software that you don't have sources
for. And the Securpack people won't give you the sources for their
stuff, so if you follow their guidelines, you don't run their software.

    Re: .7
Huh? What about VMS? I don't get all the sources, we both know there is
a censor list of stuff that doesn't go outside. Does this mean I am
stuck with my home grown Operating system??

Can I quote you and remove Inspect from my system?

Besides that, I agree with you, Secupack is not required nor mentioned
in the leatest MEM security policy.

But John (and I) have access to the complete sources so the point
       	is moot.. :-)
