I have a customer who has asked me two questions for informational purposes only. 1. He has a VS3100 Model 30 which he received very early. His latest Model 30 (just received) has a little switch (S3) like the Model 40 box which sends/doesn't send boot info to an attached printer. Why has this shown up on his latest Model 30's and not on the older ones? 2. The 3 1/2" disk floppy disks that are "industry compatible" have a small hole in the lower right hand corner that is not in the "industry compatible" media that he purchases. After punching the hole in with his pocket knife, the disks work just fine. Is this a DEChole or is it an industry standard? They purchase lots of 3 1/2" diskettes and all are not from DEC. PS: I promised to ask these silly a** questions. I would really like to give him some reply other than the obvious. Thanks TC

Try TURRIS::MICROVAX. I think it does hardware questions for MicroVAX and VAXstation systems. --Simon

The little hole is the marker that signifies HIGH DENSITY disks ie disks that support 1.4 meg!!! This is how the drive tells if 720k or 1.4m disks are being used. I would caution your user about modifying 720k disk like this as a) he is likely to get loose bits in his drive causing all sorts of problems and posibly damaging his read/write heads and b) his disks will not be certified at 1.4m and he is likely to get dropouts and errors. As far as i am aware the extra hole IS an industry standard!!! he will just have to pay extra (quite a bit extra) to get HIGH DENSITY disks! Gerry

I'll try turris::microvax & I already told the customer not to punch holes in anything but paper!! |
