Note 1146.0 VMS to Ultrix window - Sizing problem No replies
MAIL::VOGEL "Steve Vogel - MDC Sales, St. Louis" 32 lines 20-JUL-1989 11:55
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been working with an ISV called Nova Graphics. They have a GKS
implementation that is being installed in my account (McDonnell-Douglas).
They have the application running on a stand-alone VAXstation running VMS
and on a stand-alone DECstation running Ultrix. They are very pleased with
the performance and the easy of implementing under Digital's X windowing
product (ie: DECwindows).
With both of these platforms operational, the next challenge was to run the
application from a VMS based VAX and display the out-put in an X window on
a DECstation. Here in lies the problem.
The application on the VAX creates a window on the DECstation using X calls.
The window is placed in the correct location on the screen, as specified, but
the size is that of an icon no matter what size is specified. If they go to
the DECstation and try to enlarge the window, it immediately goes to a
maximum size in the direction the window is being stretched (ie: horizontal or
vertical). If the widow is sized by the corner, the size goes to max in all
directions.
As an added quirk, if no size is specified when the window is created, it
takes a default size, about that of a DECterm window. If it is then re-sized
it reacts the same as before.
Is there a solution to this problem, are we doing something wrong, or is
this not a supported function until DECwindows V2 ?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated,
Steve Vogel

| That is truly bizarre. To run an X application on VMS and display on a
DECstation, one should merely need to do a SET DISPLAY/CREATE specifying the
appropriate node name and then just run the applicaiton. I've done this
millions of times, using lots of applications. It sounds like there's something
very wrong with the window create call that is getting the geometry all messed
up.

1324.3 | Supported or not - that's the question | YF23::VOGEL | Steve Vogel - MDC Sales, St. Louis | Tue Aug 22 1989 17:53 | 13 |
| The DECwindows window manager is running. I believe the developer may
have a problem in their code but the Atlanta hotline told the customer
that VMS to ULTRIX, while the code is there, is not supported. If it is
supported, the developer will have to do further investigation of their
code and our hotline should be able to help.
The SPDs for VMS and ULTRIX do not state whether the above fuctionality
is supported or not.
Thanks,
Steve
