1314.1 | Could you supply some more information? | HANNAH::MESSENGER | Bob Messenger | Mon Aug 21 1989 16:00 | 14 |
| Re: .0
There are several bugs that can cause DECterm V1 to crash. What were you doing
just before the crash? Were you using ReGIS or sixels, or just text?
It's also possible that you ran out of some resource, such as virtual memory
(even though you said you have large values for your system parameters). How
many DECterm windows did you have running?
It's unfortunate that the entire controller crashes when there is a problem in
one window. There isn't much improvement for this in V2; maybe V3...

1314.2 | more info | ESCROW::DEPLEDGE | | Mon Aug 21 1989 17:12 | 15 |
| I was not doing any graphics stuf. I just had lots of text windows
open logged onto many remote machines. I don't think the problem is just
related to having many windows open as I can get away with many windows
for quite a while before this problem happens.
Infact the problem has only shown up about five times since april.
The problem always crops up while I execute a command of the form
crt -sethost kopec
where crt := $DBUGME$DUA0:[DEPLEDGE.XTOOLS]DECW$CRETERM.EXE
crt is a command I use to create new windows that connect to remote nodes
This problem has shown up on several other peoples workstations in
my group. They also get the crash while creating new windows.

1314.3 | Maybe caused by the memory leak | HANNAH::MESSENGER | Bob Messenger | Tue Aug 22 1989 12:20 | 14 |
| Re: .2
Something else to be aware of is that there is a memory leak in DECterm V1:
it doesn't free fonts when you exit out of a window or change fonts. If you
run the same controller over a long enough period of time (creating new
windows and/or changing fonts) eventually DECterm will run out of memory.
When you go home at night, try Quitting out of the session manager instead
of Pausing, and see if the problem goes away. If not, you should probably
submit a QAR, but I'm not going to worry about it too much unless people
start reporting the same thing in DECterm V2.

1314.4 | Another User with DECterm Problems | PREBLE::WILLIS | | Thu Aug 31 1989 15:34 | 10 |
| At least once a week I get the following message in my session mgr. window:
"DECterm Controller process stopped: Message number 12DB821C
Started DECterm controller"
At this point all my DECterms are gone.
I always run with 3 DECterms. I can't repeat the problem. Sometimes I'm
just typing and other times I'm running a DECwindows application program.

1314.5 | Me too ! | YIPPEE::BUXTON | Steve Buxton - EAITG Valbonne | Fri Sep 01 1989 12:29 | 18 |
| I also get this problem, at random intervals.
I generally have 4 DECTerms running, linked to 3 hosts, and it's very
annoying when they all disappear.
Sometimes I don't get the problem for several weeks, then yesterady it
happened twice in the same day, leaving the messages :-
DECTerm controller process stopped : Message number 12DB822A
Started DECTerm controller
DECTerm controller process stopped : access violation
Started DECTerm controller
Can anyone give me any pointers ? Which system parameters should I
start with ??

1314.6 | For the accvio, look at GBLPAGES/GBLSECTIONS | HANNAH::MESSENGER | Bob Messenger | Fri Sep 01 1989 16:09 | 8 |
| Re: .5
I don't think there are any parameters you can tweak to fix message number
12DB821C, but the accvio is often caused by GBLPAGES or GBLSECTIONS being
too low.

1314.7 | Regis maybe, Global sections/pages maybe not | YIPPEE::BUXTON | Steve Buxton - EAITG Valbonne | Mon Sep 04 1989 11:45 | 15 |
| OK, I think it may have something to do with the PIC in DBQ, which is a
Regis drawing. DECTerm doesn't seem to handle this too well - sometimes
the text is missing unless you switch to another window then return,
e.g.
But I don't think it's the Global Pages / sections problem : I have
52398/27602 Global Pages Used/Unused, and 219/181 Global Sections
Used/Unused. The DBQ Regis seems to take about 2,000 Global Pages.
It seems to be happening when I shrink the DBQ window, do something
else, then try to bring it back. Any more ideas ?

1314.8 | Access Violation again ... | YIPPEE::BUXTON | Steve Buxton - EAITG Valbonne | Tue Sep 05 1989 11:56 | 16 |
| I just got the Access Violation again.
This morning I checked all the suggested parameters in 110, and mine
are way above. I have around 450 spare Global Sections, 50,000 unused
Global Pages, and my GBLPAGFIL is 22048.
The problem always occurs when I'm using DBQ, though I always use SET
NOPIC now, so it's not Regis-related. I had a DBQ window up and pulled
another window up from an icon and all 4 DECTerms just disappeared.
I'm pretty convinced now that it's a resource problem, but not GBLSECT,
GBLPAGES or GBLPAGFIL. How can I find out which one it is ??

1314.9 | Could this be V2 EFT1? | AGBEAR::HORNER | A.G.Bear, Low tech teddy bear | Tue Sep 05 1989 13:41 | 8 |
| I just quick checked, and no one really said what version this was. I
submitted a QAR for V2 EFT1 about all my DECterms disappearing with an
access violation. I was lucky enough to find a traceback for it. The
answer was "fixed in V2 FT2", and I've been running FT2 since last Friday
with no problems.

1314.10 | Ooops - running an old version | YIPPEE::BUXTON | Steve Buxton - EAITG Valbonne | Wed Sep 06 1989 04:58 | 11 |
| Looks like I'm running V1 FT2 (I'm on VMS V5.0-2, and the DECWindows
images have an id of "DECWINDOWS FT2").
To get the latest version I guess I have to be on VMS V5.2 ? And until
then I just have to live with the problem ?
OK, sorry for clogging up your conference ....

1314.11 | Probably either V5.1 or X5.3 | AGBEAR::HORNER | A.G.Bear, Low tech teddy bear | Wed Sep 06 1989 12:22 | 6 |
| You can get the SSB version of DECwindows V1 with VMS V5.1. If you
want the latest V2 FT version of DECwindows, then you want VMS X5.3.
I believe that VMS V5.2 only had some DECwindows V1 bug fixes in it.
