1226.0. "User defined network map?" by ACESMK::SILVA (Carl Silva) Wed Aug 02 1989 20:50

I have a customer who would like to be able to have a graphics display
of a map and a user could place icons (and switch a grid on and off) on the
map representing a network. Then, a process would collect network events
(alarms, high bit error rate, etc.) and either change the color of the icons or
cause them to blink.

I have several questions since I am by no means a windows expert.
These are:

	1. Is the graphics handled through windows?
	2. How is icon creation and placement handled through windows?
	3. Would the color and blinking be handled through windows?
	4. Would it be possible to write a user interface that would be
portable between DECwindows and X-windows environments? Are there
some standard coding techniques for doing this?
	5. Are there any examples that could jump start me in this application?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

	Carl

RE: .0

There are a couple of widgets for network graphics display and editing (NetEd and
GoBe (Conferences @ CLT::GOBE-WIDGET & CLT::NETED-WIDGET) which may be of
interest to you.

I would also advise that you contact Terry Smith of ASDS (NETMAN::SMITH - who is
the Product Manager for Matterhorn), and get info on his product.

	Thanks for the help.

Would NetEd and GoBe be available to sell to customers?

No...I think not. As far as I am aware, they are both for internal use only at
present. Check in the relevant notesfile though.

Currently, SDT Widget Set widgets (GObE, NetEd, Print, SVN) are not available
to customers. Product Management is currently exploring alternatives for
changing this but no process is yet in place. Stay tuned to the notesfiles
(e.g., clt::gobe-widget, clt::neted-widget) for future developments.

	Thanks for the info.

Unless a source code license is planned, I'm not sure the customer
would use it since it will be part of their product.

You might like to contact the following third party:

    V.I. Corporation
    Amherst MA
    (413) 253-3482

They have a package called Dataviews which does exactly the sort of
thing you are looking for. They have a demo which they give away
fairly freely which includes "live" network maps etc.

Thanks for the info on Dataviews. Do they work on VAXes and other
platforms? Do you have some experience with it?

Yes it does work on other platforms - Sun in particular have been using
it as a demo for ages. I have only used it for demo purposes, not in
anger, but I suggest you get hold of the demo kit and try it.
