1214.0. "what's a gadget?" by ELRIC::MARSHALL (hunting the snark) Tue Aug 01 1989 19:27

    Could someone provide the formal definition (and an english
    translation) for "widget" and "gadget"?

    Thanks

  The term WIDGET refers to the combination of an X window, or subwindow, and
the semantics associated with it (a human interface abstraction). Menus,
text windows, and scroll bars are examples of widgets.

  A GADGET is a widget without a window.  It is a high-performance,
reduced-function widget because there is no window associated with it.
Gadgets require less memory and run-time overhead than widgets, but are
less customizable and more limited in function.
