1212.0. "SUN --- an investment opportunity" by DOOBER::GAVIN (paul gavin) Tue Aug 01 1989 15:04

I have just read the enclosed article which was extracted from a market
report by SHEARSON LEHMAN on SUN Microsystems.

"
	.. To promote it's window system as a standard , Sun's X.View tool
kit , which is used to develop applications with Sun's window system , is
included on the X.11 source code tape from MIT for free. Now ,any application
developer has free access to X.View . X.View leverages seven years of window
system development at Sun. Sun's current window system strategy for the near
term contrasts with confusing signals from IBM and DEC. For example developers
wanting to support DEC hardware have to chosse wether to write to DEC's
proprietary DEC windows or OSF's delayed ( by at least six months ) Motif user
interface. "

	end of quote

This is the message that the stock market analysts are getting from Sun and
giving to the investment community who in turn comprise many of our customers.
This information is so grossly incorrect that we should ask SHEARSON LEHMAN to
detract it !!

I am directly involved with Shearson, Lehman, Hutton...and their struggle
to have a common X platform.

Shearson is the *largest* consumer of Sun products on Wall Street! So,
that should tell you a lot about the bias of their report.

What those propeller heads on the trading floors think or say, directly
conflicts with what some of their own application developers have seen
recently from DIGITAL. The remainder of the story is too sensitive to
write in this file. Just continue your subsription to the Wall Street
Journal...as something major is about to take place ;-)

BTW: Probably, this note will be more appreciated in the MARKETING Conference.

Just remember the following key terms:

"Open" -- a proprietary product developed by SUN
"Proprietary" -- a comparable product developed by some company other than SUN.

"...in a few years OPEN LOOK will be [so forgotten as to be]
