On 8-plane VAXstation II/GPX, VAX Workstation Softoware reserves 6 hardware color map entries for system. So, generally we can use 250 colors at the same time. Exactly speaking, one more color map is reserved when we try to change one of the display colors. On the other hand, which color map entries are reserved in DECwindows? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ From costomization menu, at least 8 color maps must be needed, I suppose. That is, Customize Window 1. Screen Foreground Color 2. Screen Background Color 3. Window Foreground Color 4. Window Background Color 5. Window Highlight Color 6. Window Border Color Customize Pointer 7. Pointer Foreground Color 8. Pointer Background Color And may be, one more color map is reserved for the pallet to change display colors. Thanks in advance for any help. And if you can, please tell me concrete numbers of each color maps, and a case of 4-plane system. Toshiyuki Tsurumi,

Which color map entries, if any, are reserved by the server, window manager, session manager, or other standard components varies from implementation to implementation. Differences in both hardware and in software affects this. You can't count on any specific entries in the default color map being either always reserved or always available. --PSW |
