1201.0. "Session Manager aborts after Print Screen" by KOBY::DORON (Doing my BEST !!!) Sun Jul 30 1989 15:53

Hi,

 I have the following problem. (If it have been mentioned on this notes file
before, I am sorry):

 I am running DECwindows 5.1 on a VaxStation 3100 (as a satellite on a NI
Cluster). I have tryied to use the print screen option on the session manager
menu bar and I was surprised to see that after quiting the print dialogue box,
the session manager aborted. I have tried to print the entire screen or a
portion of it, and yet the problem still occured.

 Looking at the sys$login:DECW$SM.LOG discoverd the following:

Session Error: %SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, reason mask=01, Virtual
Address=01FFFFFE, PC=0005215B, PSL=03C00000

 The symptom did not repeat it self while I have used the Capture to a file
option.

	Help/Hints are mostly required.

    First, V5.1-B is the supported version on the VAXstation 3100.

    Second, upgrade to V5.1-1, there was a fix for the problem you
    describe.

1201.2It is VMS 5.1-1KOBY::DORONDoing my BEST !!!Mon Jul 31 1989 05:1813

 My Mistake. I did not mention that the VMS version is 5.1-1. (I thought it was
obvious since VaxStation 3100 is involved). Any way, the problem is still there
on current version and the DECwindows is 5.1 SDC !

    Re .4: The bug is an uninitialized variable. That leads to variable
    failure.

1201.6But yet...TMIS01::DORONDoing my BEST !!!Tue Aug 01 1989 04:1612
Thanks guys to your replies. Still I did not get definite answers:

	- Is it a known bug on VMS 5.1-1 !!! (If yes how come it works fine
	  on some system?
	- Will VMS 5.2 resolve the problem for sure?

	- Does not the fact that the problem does not occur on another system
	  indicates that it cuold be a simple tuning probelm? (I yes what sould
	  I check?)

    RE: .6 more questions about printscreen accvio

      - Is it a known bug on VMS 5.1-1 !!! (If yes how come it works fine
              on some system?

    Yes it is a known bug that affects VMS V5.1 and V5.1-1 systems. The
    nature of the bug (uninitialized variable) means that sometimes you
    see the bug and sometimes you don't. You will almost always see it
    if you capture the entire screen twice.

      - Will VMS 5.2 resolve the problem for sure?

    Yes. If it doesn't then there's another problem that you should QAR.
    Note that the problem wasn't fixed in field test versions of V5.2, but
    only in the SDC kit.

      - Does not the fact that the problem does not occur on another system
        indicates that it cuold be a simple tuning probelm? (I yes what sould
        I check?)

    It is not a tuning problem.

1201.8I am Convinced. Thnx.TMIS01::DORONDoing my BEST !!!Wed Aug 02 1989 03:471
