good morning friends!
let's make it short:
we lost/loose/will loose some workstations business in switzerland primarily
against SIEMENS in big strategic accounts like swiss PTT, chemical industry,
federal departments etc. because:
- we do not have iconified documentation-(ddif-file)-adminstration
(like e.g we had/have with INTERLEAF or ALIS etc. and its folders, cabinets,
drawers etc.) rsp. the end user has to deal with ddif-files on dcl-level...
- just simple stuff would be enough: any environment for the local decwrite
user would do!
- because we have not an iconified easy ddif-file-distribution system for inside
a lan.
- just simple stuff would do: something like an iconified "decnet-based-
ddif-file-copy-system" for workstations in a lan.
- bacuse we are in switzerland here and speak something like german (ever
heared about?)
please note:
- we don't need now a full sophisticated portation of all-in-1 functionality
to decwindows (of course we need that too, but to avoid bigger damage we
would be happy with simple tools ***NOW***)
- we don't need now something like MICA or DWA1 etc. (of course we will be
very happy to get it soon, but to avoid bigger damage we would be happy with
simple tools ***NOW***))
- we just need the mentioned above ****NOW*****
- of course we can program that ourself (and obviously we have to do this...?!)
but before investigating time/resources i ask the following
questions:
- is there allready any asset/program/etc. like that. we need it really just
for demos!!!
we teach our customers in osf, uil, cda, ddif, osf, oda-odif, iso-osi,
x11, -... and they just wonder why we don't show them such a nice and
simple thing as autmatic/iconified mailing and adminstrating of ddif-files!
thanks for any answers!
peter

You CAN mail ddifs (using either decw$mail or VAXmail) and you can include them in notes files today. You can always deal with the files using FileView. I also vaguely remember hearing something about a more general filing cabinet system though I don't remember where. Dick | |||||

paul and dick,
thanks for answer!
paul: "german decwrite" : intersesting! that would/will help allready
a lot!
dick: "decw$mail and FileView": of course you and I would work like
this. but the customer(s) are somewhat
idefix. to work with decw$mail, FileView
and VAXmail etc. you need some minimum
VMS-experience (" directories, some dcl's
etc." ) and finally it is ***not the
functionality what we miss, it is a stupid,
simple user interface in form of icons
etc*** arround it.
(sorry, i know, stupid is the wrong word,
but i think you understand me)
have a good time!
