1136.0. "Support for SMG$ Routines" by NBOFS1::HERMANN (SMService PHILIPS-Nuernberg) Wed Jul 19 1989 04:14

    The question is , if applications's written with SMG$ Routines ,
    are fully compatible in a DECWINDOW environment ?

    That's very important for our customer , otherwise , those program's
    have to be rewritten .

1136.1QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centWed Jul 19 1989 08:355
    Absolutely - as long as the application is run from a DECterm
    window.

1136.2And with XTERM ?NBOFS1::HERMANNSMService PHILIPS-NuernbergThu Jul 20 1989 03:215
    I guess , with DECterm window you mean a VTxxx terminal emulation.

    But , what is the result , if i have to work with XTERM ?

Now you're asking a different question. Since DECwindows on both Ultrix
and VMS provides DECterm (someone correct me if I'm wrong), then my
statement that SMG applications can run under DECwindows without problems
is accurate.

Now if you want to ask about XTERM, which, as I understand it, is not
completely ANSI-compliant, the answer may be different. Perhaps someone
more familiar with XTERM can comment. Is it even officially supported
on Ultrix?

1136.4SMG is terminal independentCSC32::B_WACKERThu Jul 20 1989 14:505
Even if xterm is not fully ansi (vt) compatible the whole point of SMG
is to allow terminal indepencence through termtable.exe, etc. Ergo it
should work but you may have to define your own xterm terminal type to
SMG.

1136.5So far , so good !NBOFS1::HERMANNSMService PHILIPS-NuernbergTue Jul 25 1989 07:4614
    I trie , do explain my question more precisely .

    So far , as I know , is it possible to run a application over the
    network , with DECWINDOWS .
    If I create a application environment on a remote workstation and
    try to run this program on this node , w i t h o u t defining a
    DECterm (e.g. VT220,....) , what output get I , if I run a program
    with attached SMG-Routines ?
    Or what kind of setup is to do , to get this application running
    on the workstation ?

    /Hermann

    Ok, I think I understand your question. The answer is that SMG
    applications can ONLY be run from a terminal window (or with
    output directed to a terminal window on the same node). SMG
    applications cannot run on one node and display on another.

    Of course, you can always create a DECterm window, SET HOST to the
    other node and run the application there.

I think I remember hearing something about SMG creating it's own DECterm if
certain conditions exist. You may want to look/ask in the SMG conference.

    Thank you , to all guy's for the answer's.

    I have to support PKI in VMS and a l l layered produkt's and I
    am not so familiar with DECWINDOW'S yet !
