| You seem to be a little confused to what DECwindows is.
DECwindows is a program in which the MIT X11 windowing system, along with
the Digital XUI (X user interface toolkit), CDA (Compound Document Arch),
and a set of OOTB (out of the box) applications, is implemented under
the VAX/VMS and the ULTRIX-32 operating systems. Another part of the
program is to provide an X server under MSdos, so that PC's can share in
this environment.
It provides a workstation user with a windowing environment, via a graphical
interface.
That's a real simple overview.
Now, there is a tool/application called VAXpc. This application provides
emulation of a PC/AT under the VAX/VMS operating system. The hardware of
the PC is emulated to the point where REAL MSdos will run under this
emulator. Thus providing an MSdos environment. (This all runs under
DECwindows). It will interface with the RX33 and RX23 devices on most low
end workstation hardware platforms. (VAX based). It will NOT read copy
protected diskettes, or any other brain-damaged MSdos diskettes that some
paranoid person modified so no one can copy them. This is because it is
next to impossible to emulate the Disk controller chip.
I hope this answers your question, and puts you in context.

| Thanx Jeff,
you set me straight, I have been under the impression VAXpc has
been part of DECwindows i.e. both in one piece. From what you say,
VAXpc could therefor run on a Microvax_II without using windows.
Thank's again, Rudi.
