1103.0. "14mb VS2000 crashes when Windows starts" by KCBBQ::TERRY () Thu Jul 13 1989 00:07

    	I NEED HELP!

    	I have a virgin VS2000/gpx that is LAVC with a 3600. We
    	have had DECW051 installed under VMS 5.1-B on the 3600 for
    	quite a while. My problem is that I recently clustered
    	the "2000" using local page and swap files (35000,12000
    	blocks respectively). The cluster formed fine, but when I
    	start DECWindows my system boots without ANY trace. I let
    	DECWindows autogen the MV2000 parameters without any
    	complaints but the system still boots upon startup of
    	windows.

    	After thinking I had a corrupted driver somewhere, I obtained
    	a known good copy and re-installed without a hitch. After
    	getting a terminal window for a few minutes, doing plain
    	DCL commands (i.e., sh def, dir, etc.), I finally bugchecked
    	with a complaint in the DUMP file of BUGCHECK IN KERNAL MODE,
    	however, the dump file was not completely written.

    	After, restarting windows, I started getting system boots
    	right after the DECW$SERVER_MAIN gets fired off. From then
    	on, I never got the windows up at all. It just boots at various
    	stages of the startup sequence. DECnet was already up and
    	appeared fine. Removing the windows from the startup and
    	running it from my account yields the same behavior.

    	The system is configured as follows:

    	MV2000 with a color VR290
    	14MB Mem.
    	1 RD-54 (containing the local page and swap files)
    	No load device (hence the need to cluster)

    	I had field service diagnose the HELL out of it with
    	all tests indicating a good system.

    	I realize that I'm new at windows, but this has me
    	stumped! Am I stupid, or is there anything down deep
    	that I overlooked? Any help would be GREATLY apprciated!

    	I have a monochrome VS2000 on the same cluster with exact
    	same problem. It is configured exactly the same as the
    	color box

    	Thanks in advance for any help

    This is a *VERY* WAG. What HW version of the CPU do you have? If it is
    pre-V1.2, then it won't support 14mb. This *might* cause the problems
    you describe.

    Not having manuals or anything with me at home, can't remember which
    TEST it is, but at the >>> prompt, typ TEST 53 (I think) which shows
    the config.

    By the way, as a Moderator of DECWINDOWS, I've changed the title of
    this topic to something a little more meaningful than "Need help bad".

1103.3Check the memory board tooLINNHE::SYSTEMA wave without a shore ...Thu Jul 13 1989 05:178
Check the memory board in the VS2000 too. Some people in my group have had
similar problems with machines stack dumping for no good reason.

This is more fully gone into in the MICROVAX notesfile on TURRIS but I forget
the note id.

    TEST 50 will yield the hardware facts about the system including the
    version of the firmware on the VS2000.

To run the 12 meg memory card, you must have a minimum of V2.2 of the system
firmware. Like stated before, this has been covered in detail in
TURRIS::MICROVAX. Please check there for more info.

1103.6HAVE THE RIGHT REVS.KCBBQ::TERRYThu Jul 13 1989 17:1316

    	Both systems have the proper firmware and VMS show memory
    	does recognize all the memory. I am still at a loss as
    	to how something seemingly easy is acting so strange

    	Thanks,
    	Brian Terry

    Got any 4mb boards around? Swap one for a 12mb board and see what
    happens.

1103.8Please check the .5 referenceAGBEAR::HORNERA.G.Bear, Low tech teddy bearSat Jul 15 1989 09:1810
    Please read the microvax note mentioned in .5. There were problems
    with early rev A2 12MB boards that would crash the VAX when memory
    references went above the 10MB mark. Not all 12MB boards were
    affected however, only those with certain chips. The microvax note
    tells how to identify these boards with the affected chips, and then
    have Field Service check your boards. Your problems are the classic
    symptoms of having one of these boards.

    	After doing some checking...it seems that Both systems have
    	the bogus 12MB boards. I appreciate the help, you all pointed
    	me in the right direction and helped me discover information
    	regarding these boards.

    	Thanks!!!

1103.10VS2000 decwindow crash, but not memory boardTOHOKU::TAYLORThu Dec 14 1989 16:559
    We have a VS 2000 that also crashes after the decwindows background is
    put up but before the digital logo. But we know it is not the recent
    memory upgrade, we connected another system disk to successfully boot
    the same system.

    ideas?

    thanks,
            mike

Have you autogen'd?
1103.12autogen did not helpTOHOKU::TAYLORThu Dec 14 1989 20:236
    tried autogen a couple of times, including without the old
    modparams.dat that worked in 5.2/1.0.

    The DECW$server*.log are empty, and DECW$SM.LOG is not created.
