1102.0. "Using VWS Applications with DECwindows?" by CXCAD::CHAMBON (Chuck Chambon, 719-632-8413) Wed Jul 12 1989 22:46

I want to use a VWS application package (MatrixX) on a workstation
running DECwindows. MatrixX claims that a DECwindow version is
in the works, but past performance indicates that it probably
won't happen till next spring. Does anyone have or know of
any software around for DECwindows that will let me run VWS stuff
without needing to reboot my system when I need to change back and
forth? If switching back and forth between VWS and DECwindows
can only be done by rebooting the system, please direct me to the
location of that information. My workstation is not part of a cluster
and does not have access to the E-net except though dial-up.

	Thanks,
	Chuck

The only way that I'm aware of to switch is by rebooting. The DECwindows
installation guide explains how to do this.

The jist of it is that you install both VWS and DECwindows. You then set
the SYSGEN parameter WINDOW_SYSTEM to either a 0 or 1 for either VWS or
DECwindows respectively, and reboot your system.

  Hope this helps. :^)

But see note 101 for something that goes in the opposite direction.
    You may find it handy.

Your system only has access thru dial up? Does that mean you are
near customers? If so, it might not be wise to have them see what
       Steve mentioned..

If you require a production performance environment, the only way to
do it is by rebooting. The simplest way to do this is to copy your
SYS$SYSTEM:VAXVMSSYS.PAR to VWS.PAR. The go ahead and install
DECwindows, copy the VAXVMSSYS.PAR under DECwindows to DWS.PAR. Now
the switch can be done by an interactive boot:

    B/1

    SYSBOOT> USE DWS.PAR
    SYSBOOT> EXIT

and use VWS.PAR to get VWS.

If you do not require a production performance DECwindows environment,
note 101 describes a X11 Server that runs under VWS. It is about 1/2
the speed of native DECwindows and provides a VS2000 monochrome
    "virtual DECwindows workstation".

The other way around; VWS on X11 will probably not be ready till around
    Christmas.

1102.5What about Valid?HPSRAD::KOMARStable is a word invented so we could sleep at nightThu Aug 03 1989 18:3311

[Caution, this post is based on Rumors, not Information]

I've heard that Valid (GED?) which is VWS only (at this point)
is able to "run over DecWindows"

    	How is this done?

1102.6STAR::MCLEMANWhen in doubt, muck with sysgen parametersFri Aug 04 1989 08:529
It is a hack. Someone wrote a UISSHR that tries to convert UIS to
DECwindows calls. However, it leaves much to be desired. Plus, I
would bet your production work on it. The VWS group is working
on a migration package that will run the UIS graphics stuff on
    DECwindows. See VWSENG::VWS_DW_MIGRATION for details.

As Jeff suggests, a group in Littleton wrote a quick and dirty UISSHR
that can handle much of GED... at least enough so it's popular among
some of our hardware engineers. You can find out about this in the
    conference:

    	TALLUS::XUIS

Note also as Jeff has indicated, a 'real' XUIS is being worked on as
we speak. However, until we get the basic primitives working and some
preliminary performance data ready, we aren't willing to discuss it in
too much detail in a public notesfile.

I will publish details as soon as it's practical. Suffice it to say
that the plan is to provide "most" of UIS with user (and application)
selectable performance/accuracy and to allow applications to run
    without recompiling or relinking.

Also, one of the first ISVs to produce a demo for the PMAX was VALID. They
ported a UNIX version to ULTRIX & X11. It provides a good demonstration
of GED. However, it is not available as a product, I haven't seen anything
indicating when it would be and they had not even started porting the support
programs like the packager.

PS. I think it is TALLIS::XUIS not TALLUS::XUIS.
