1098.0. "DECpaint Blues" by EST::JARGENTATI () Wed Jul 12 1989 12:00

    Hello everyone,

    Can anyone tell me if there is a better drawing program available
    than DECpaint. It just isn't meeting my needs...

    Thank you in advance.

    Sincerely,
    John Argentati

Try RAGS. It's not the easiest thing to use but is extremely powerful. I
think if you do a "DIR/TITLE=RAGS" you may find out where you can get RAGS
and possibly other comments.

I believe RAGS is for internal use only.

    Try DECwrite. It's much easier than RAGS, and it does a pretty good
    job with graphics editing. While you're at it, it will edit all the
    rest of your document, too!

Ok, is this bait or what? :-)

While its true that the user interface os RAGS is not DECwindows complient,
I think RAGS is much easier then DECwrite in terms of drawing. Come to
think of it, use PROTORAGS (part of the RAGS kit). It's RAGS with a
DECwindows conforming interface.

1098.5DECwrite will cost $$$ soonNORGE::CHADIch glaube Ich tte Ich htteThu Jul 13 1989 16:305
Also, as I've heard, DECwrite's going to have a royalty license and
internal transfer cost per user. (please correct me if I'm wrong).

1098.7What are your needs?EPIK::J_JOSEPHHave you seen Jack in the GreenFri Jul 14 1989 13:1310
Well, what are your needs? If you want bitmap editing, neither DECwrite nor
RAGS is going to help you - better stick with DECpaint. If you want object
oriented editing - That's not what paint is designed for and you are better
off using either DECwrite or RAGS. Though DECwrite is not easy to begin
using, it's not bad once you get the hang of it. And I think the graphics
features are pretty simple to use even if you have never used DECwrite
before.

1098.8"Interviews"....Anybody?FUEL::grahamSend in the Clones!Fri Jul 14 1989 19:3510
INTERVIEWS (from Stanford University) has a drawing package sitting
on DECWRL::. I have copied it but I haven't had the time to experiment
with yet. Interviews, from what I have heard and read so far, packages
applications that are better than *some* DECwindows OOTB applications.
Plus, it is free and you have the sources to play with..except that, it
is written in C++.

1098.11So, back to the original question: Is there a better PAINT?DELNI::MHARRISNetwrk Integ'n ProjectsThu Jun 14 1990 14:2527
    Note: The following are NOT flames! Just want to know!

    RE: -.1-.10
    So back to the original question and many other related questions in
    this notesfile...

    Is there a package that is BETTER than DECpaint available internally
    or soon to be available?

    A year ago, when I asked the question, I was told that Digital's
    strategy was to provide the foundation for 3rd Parties to build upon.
    DECpaint at Digital was being 'maintained' by a single engineer since it
    was "not very critical"...

    Well now, a year later, are we in any better position? Is there a
    Third-Party package that is 'plug-in' replaceable for DECpaint (CDA
    compliant, XUI, etc) ?? DECpaint is still much to elementary. Not
    enough functionality. (For instance the way ARC's are treated, or the
    Zillion keystrokes required to create a filled, outlined, box, or
    quite a few other examples...)

    I think something more in-line with the PAINT Packages available on the
    open market (Like MS-WINDOWS Paint for instance)
    is what EVERYBODY I have asked is looking for.

	Try RAGS - it is object oriented, can import DDIF, RAGS, SIXEL and
	I think postscript. It has a TON of features and it very robust
	and I hear it may soon be offered on ASSETS. There is a conference
	on it, but I can't recall where. Maybe someone can offer a pointer?

	    ANNOUNCING THE VAX DOCUMENT WRITER'S TOOLKIT V1.0

The VAX DOCUMENT Writer's Toolkit V1.0 is now available on the network for
internal users. This is a new, single-installation kit that includes these
components:

    o	VAX DOCUMENT V1.2-B (a new version for internal users)
    o	RAGS T2.0 (a stable version)
    o	UTOX V3.0-1 (a stable version)

To run VAX DOCUMENT V1.2-B, you must have

    o	A Product Authorization Key (PAK) - see below
    o	VMS V5.1 or later

To *read* the online books created by V1.2-B, including many of the online
books in the [...BOOKS] directory, you must have

    o	VMS V5.3 or later -- the current version of the Bookreader

WHAT'S NEW SINCE V1.2/V1.2A?
============================

This is the first version packaged as the VAX DOCUMENT Writer's Toolkit.
The RAGS and UTOX images, and RAGS clip art library, are here for the first
time. Within VAX DOCUMENT itself, these changes occurred:
    o	internal enhancements and online bookbuilding are now bundled into
	this single VAX DOCUMENT kit
    o	many bugs have been fixed in base software, internal enhancements,
	and online bookbuilding support
    o	DOCUMENT/DEVICE_CONVERTER=DUPLEX will give you blank pages at the ends
	of chapters, etc., if left-hand (even-numbered) pages are skipped.
	THIS APPLIES ONLY TO POSTSCRIPT OUTPUT and does not, at this time,
	provide different offsets for right-hand and left-hand (recto/verso)
	pages.

See the V1.2-B Internal Notes for details of these changes.

CUP LOCAL DOCTYPE KITS
======================

We have held back the announcement of VAX DOCUMENT V1.2-B until representatives
of other CUP groups that produce widely-used doctypes have been able to test
against it, update their kits, and test again. Look for announcements of
coordinated local CUP doctypes at virtually the same time you see this
announcement.
1098.14RAGS is pretty good...HPSCAD::WALLNo bargain, reason, pity, or remorseFri Jun 15 1990 14:415

    Note there are things DECpaint will do that RAGS will not, for example,
    an easy way to do free-hand curves.

1098.15RAGS conferencesVIA::EPPESI'm not making this up, you knowFri Jun 15 1990 17:1413
You can install RAGS without installing all of DOCUMENT. See CLOSET::PROTORAGS
or CLOSET::DOC_GRAPHICS for kit information. (CLOSET::DOC_GRAPHICS was
originally created to discuss GRED, the graphics editor that ran on UIS. RAGS
is the GRED replacement on DECwindows. Originally, RAGS didn't have an
interface that conformed to the DECwindows Style Guide; now it does, and that
version is known as PROTORAGS, hence the PROTORAGS conference. Kit information
is posted in both; the information is a little easier to find in PROTORAGS
because it's a smaller conference.)

Incidentally, RAGS is going to be released to customers as part of
VAX DOCUMENT.
