Now that they're starting to talk about announcing the DW terminal does anyone out there know of a way to get it connected to ethernet from a residence? Though I haven't see specs on the terminal I'm assuming it will be ethernet only. Is there a box that does phone to ethernet connections?

As another recent note discussed at great length, unless you've got phone connections with 9600 baud or better, you wouldn't want to do DECwindows over phone lines.

< As another recent note discussed at great length Sorry, I did a dir/title, but didn't find anything. < unless you've got phone connections with 9600 baud or better, you < wouldn't want to do DECwindows over phone lines. Since 9600 is pretty common now does that mean that it will work, albeit somewhat slowly? I do a lot of work from home and would rather accept some limitations than have to put out $10K for a stand-alone Pvax. The CSC telecomm people said ethernet would cost on the order of $20K just for the communications hardware if it could get by security police. Are you saying that a simple Decnet connection will be sufficient, no booting, just loading all the ususal fonts, etc.? If 9600 or 19.2 will work then I can start pushing them to get some modems. Now, we don't even have anything over 2400. I know this isn't the best place to be asking about hardware futures, but it is the DECwindows community that has the most to gain and lose depending on finding a cost effective way to work from home. Pointers to additional info gratefully accepted. Bruce, CSC/CS DW Support

The answer partly depends on the protocols used, and that gets into an area that's better not discussed in a file like this one. paul

Re .5: How about fixing the DECwindows Release Notes so that they don't give you information on unannounced hardware? Denis. |
