| I would suggest you also post this in the SNAGWY
notesfile - SMAUG::SNAGWY. The IBM Interconnect
group may have some good suggestions also.

| There is a product called the DECnet/SNA 3270 Terminal Emulator
that will do (almost) everything you're looking for. (For both
VMS and Ultrix.)
This 3270 TE runs on Vtxxx's as well as in DECterms (and dxterms). It
maps the Digital keyboard keys to IBM 3270 keys. (For example, the
keypad is mapped by default to the 24 IBM PF keys.) The keyboard is also
customizable by each user with a nice help screen showing the layout.
In a nutshell, using the 3270 TE with a DECnet/SNA Gateway or VMS/SNA
software, users in a DECnet environment can easily access (with the same
terminal or workstation terminal windows) applications (like PROFS, DISOSS,
etc) on the IBM host...
The only thing this current product does not do what you described in .0 is
give you any DECterm menu bar features...and if you really want a full
DECwindows solution (with color and graphics), we're working on that too!
Again, as Nancy (an old co-worker of ours) said in .1, see the SMAUG::SNAGWY
notesfile.

Thanks, but the IBM part is not the problem right now. If
I can get a terminal window widget with some button or pull down widgets
that goes to the DCL prompt and have the ability for the window application
to transmit codes through the terminal (implement the function keys) the
person doing the demo says the he can run the IBM stuff from DCL.

989.4 | The fastest way to get it working is with UDKs | HANNAH::MESSENGER | Bob Messenger | Wed Jun 21 1989 11:13 | 13 |
| Re: .0
In order to add pulldown menus to simulate function keys you'll either have to
modify the DECterm source code or else implement your own menus using the
DECterm widget. This could take more time than you have available (especially
if "next Friday" means the 23rd).
An easier way to add IBM function key support would be to define shifted
function keys using UDK definitions. This is described in the DECterm Text
Programming Manual and in the VT330/VT340 Programmer Reference Manual.

Does the person doing the demo say that in order to get
their stuff to work, they need to send IBM key codes to
the IBM from the DEC terminal emulator? I think thats
what Dan in .2 is saying his IBM terminal emulator can do,
but he's the expert.

No...I think the function keys are just meant to be dummies to
illustrate what could be done. The idea is to have multiple
PROFS sessions on one tube with the ability to scroll and do
cut and paste between windows.

989.7 | Which PROFS | STAR::CYPRYCH | | Wed Jun 21 1989 16:15 | 5 |
| Do you mean PROFS running on VAX/VMS talking to
an IBM? Or PROFS running on the IBM but you are
logged in from a DEC host somewhere (going through
sna gateway).

PROFS running on a dinosaur that you are logged on from a DEC host.
