965.0. "Firefox software question" by AIRBAG::SWATKO (Brother, can 'ya spare a Meg?) Fri Jun 16 1989 11:01

We are ordering a Firefox for my group and have a question about software.
The Firefox can be ordered as either a VMS/DECwindows system or an
ULTRIX/DECwindows system. My question is, is this VMS/DECwindows supplied
with the system identical to the available as savesets over the enet? Or
does the version supplied with the Firefox have special software extensions
that make it different from the kit available over the net?

The reason I ask is that if the VMS/DECw software is identical to what's
available over the enet, then we will order the ULTRIX/DECw version (since
that's not available for free over the enet), install ULTRIX/DECw on one
disk and install the enet version of VMS/DECw on another disk. This will
allow us to boot either VMS or ULTRIX depending on what disk we boot from.

Is this sound reasoning?

965.1Order the Ultrix one...17305::WESTI'm just visiting this planet.Fri Jun 16 1989 11:3217
All ya need is VMS V5.1-1 and DECwindows V1.0. This release of VMS
has all the necessary SMP stuff for the firefox. So it looks like you
want to order the Ultrix version. And you are ordering it with two
drives...ooooh. The SCSI drives tend to be a bit slower than you think
but you will definitely like them.

Also, make sure that you get a 24-plane system, the colors and
capabilities are much nicer.

There are two conferences for the firefox:

SHPLOG::FIREFOX -- This is mainly marketing
NEVADA::FIREFOX -- This is more techie oriented

re: -1

'scuse me? The SCSI disks are much faster than RD54's. (2.5 to 3 times).

RE: -1

We have ten of them and we noticed that copying files, deleting files,
reading files tend to be slower than on an RD54 or RD53 on our VS III's
and VS II/GPX's.

Engineering has pointed out some issues concerning this and supposedly
they have made improvements in either VMS 5.2 or VMS 5.3 in that they will
now provide disk read ahead software and better CACHEing in general.

Anyone know where I can find a list of Supported Applications (internal
& external) that run on Firefox?

Also, we've been told that a certain McDonnell-Douglas CAD tool
(UGII) will run under DECwindows in the next version, but they won't
support Firefox. Why would this happen? Because of the multiple
    CPUs?

Is it wrong to think that a DECwindows layered product should run
    on any VAXstation?

    Thanks,
    Mike

965.5Try the FIREFOX notes fileSSPENG::MCCARTNEYWed Jun 28 1989 18:2114
For a full list of applications, check the Firefox notes file on
HARBOR::FIREFOX. You can also try contacting Leo Merta, Firefox
    Application Manager.

As for MDD, they made the decision not to port the Unigraphics packages
to Firefox, meaning not to PHIGS/PEX with the 3D extensions for a
number of reasons. I don't see any reason that their DECwindows
product, if written correctly (not assuming default visual =
pseudocolor), should not run on the Firefox. It simply means that it
will not perform as well as it could if they had ported to PHIGS and
taken advantage of PEX and the 3D hardware.

965.6UGII will run on FirefoxCOMPLX::THELLENRon Thellen, DTN 522-2952Thu Mar 01 1990 13:3312
UGII Version 7.0 (which will be shipped to internally licensed sites
shortly) will run on a Firefox. I have it installed on our cluster and
am running it on a 3540. I did have some problems initially, however.
My Firefox had 24 plane color and when I tried starting UGII I got all
kinds of errors. I don't remember exactly but it was something to do
with a bitmap error. UGII would finally open all of its windows but
they would all be blank. We finally had field service come in and
remove some color so that I am back down to 8 planes and UGII works
    fine.

Sounds like they do not know how to handle non-pseudo color visuals.
