946.1 | More colors than map entries | AGBEAR::HORNER | A.G.Bear, Low tech teddy bear | Wed Jun 14 1989 12:53 | 12 |
| Its probably a 4 plane color system. We 4 plane system owners have to
be careful how extravagant we get with colors. Its amazing how fast
you can use them up. The 4 plane systems can only support 16 active
color map entries at one time, and the error means that you tried to
use more than 16. The two possible solutions are to refrain from using
so many colors, or upgrade to a system with more than 4 planes.
There's a nice little utility in DW_EXAMPLES called XCMAP that will
show you which map entries are being used. It can be a real eye opener.

946.2 | I'm still confused | LINNHE::SYSTEM | A wave without a shore ... | Thu Jun 15 1989 02:53 | 8 |
| I get the same problem as .0. My additional problem is that one disc of my
VS2000 runs VMS V5.1-1 & DECwindows and has no problem setting any number of
colours any numer of times, whereas the other disc (same machine remember)
runs UWS2.0 and has the problems mentioned in .0 - why is this so if the same
machine is being used?

What window manager do you use on UWS? Different window and session managers
may allocate differing numbers of colors for their own use. Hpwm, for example,
tends to use more colors than the DECwindows wm. Exactly when you run out of
colors depends entirely on the application mix running at the time, and also on
your customizations.

| This was a brand new installation so there were no applications or anything
else at all running and this was the first customization. I am using
DECwindows wm...

946.5 | How do I reduce color map usage once it's full? | VLAB::SPEAKE | There is only one `S' in Speake. | Fri Jun 08 1990 13:11 | 22 |

Re: .1 >>We 4 plane system owners have to be careful how extravagant

OK. So I got a new color monitor (well, it's used, but it is new to me).
I started changing the colors and apparently got too extravagent. I tried to
make one more change and a popup box tells me, "Your color map is full. You
may not be able to perform all color setup options. [Acknowledged]"
Hmmm...I guess I will have to undo some of what I've done and settle for a more
conservative color scheme. So I click on [Acknowledged] and the popup
disappears. I wait for something else so I can do something about reducing my
color map useage but nothing shows up. Attempts to change other entries gets
the same popup and same results. I need to perform some color set up
operations to reduce my map usage but I can't do color set up operations
because my color map is full -- Catch 22.
Question: How do I free up some color map space (entries, slots, whatever)
so that I can chose a less extravagent color scheme?
Thanks,
Tom Speake

| Try logging out and back in again. That should get all the cells freed up.
Then the sm should not take up so many that you can't set it back.

| In fact, that may well leave you with enough colors. After changing them, you
were left with the old colors having been allocated by the applications and the
new colors allocated by the session manager. Probably logout/login will get
you back to ~ the same number of colors that were in use before.
