893.0. "DISPLAY POSTSCRIPT " by SDSVAX::SWEENEY (Gotham City's Software Consultant) Wed Jun 07 1989 08:38

    Can you believe it? This conference doesn't have a note with the
    title "Display Postscript".

    The party line from Digital on DPS is that "it's under development"
    The party line from Adobe on DPS is that "it's real and shipping"

    Digital's intentions on DPS are (I think):
    (1) DPS is compatible with hard-copy PS
    (2) DPS and Xlib writing ops can be mixed in one window
    (3) DPS offers a competitive advantage: the simplicity of X and the
    capability of DPS for applications that need it

    MIT Project Athena just reported getting an X server to run in one DPS
    window on the Next workstation. How's about that for turning the world
    upside down?

    Inquiring minds want to know:

    (a) Is there a newer message for ISV's and customers than what I wrote
    above?

    (b) How does one reconcile Adobe's agressive positioning of DPS with
    Digital's messages?

    (c) Is there a DPS kit and documentation set on the net now (dream
    on)...

893.1You've got it pretty much rightDECWIN::FISHERBurns Fisher 381-1466, ZKO3-4/W23Thu Jun 08 1989 12:4313
Well, in one sense, DPS is shipping, since NeXT is using it. Remember that
DPS is not tied to X in the most generic sense. Our implementation will
display it in an X window, as you said. In fact everything that you said
is essentially correct.

I don't think customers should be getting any different message than what
you just said for now.

Are you volunteering to be an internal field test site, Pat?

If people are interested in being an internal ft site for this (possibly
non-existent) thing, please send mail to me. Remember that anything that
you might get in the near future would be slow and bug-ridden. We would
not be anywhere close to real field-test quality.
