886.0. "DECwindows Trackball?" by DECMAC::SYSTEM (Jeff - The Network *IS* the System!) Tue Jun 06 1989 13:32

Does anyone make a trackball for use instead of a mouse or tablet? There are
several available for the Macintosh and PC, and make things much easier
with limited desk space.

I used one for a while and it was great. It plugged in to the same
spot as the mouse. I don't remember the name, and I think it was a
field test trackball, but you could ask Jonathan star:: Kaplan who
acted as a liason with the vendor.

We are currently using them at our customer site and I can't recall the
  name right now. (dain bramaged).

Any way, it is plug compatable with the mouse. It has three buttons.

Click-n-drags are a pain but there is a solution. The trackball has five
dip switches and when swith 3 is set then it causes TB1 (MB1) to act as
an on-off switch. Pressing and releasing it has the effect of pressing
and holding, i.e. click-n-drag. You press and release again to cause the
effect of releasing the button. To get the effect of pressing and releasing
you must press and release the TB1 twice (fast). DECwindows double-clicks
are a real pain becuase you have to press and release the button four times
  (real fast).

I will jot down the name tomorrow and post it here.

My supervisor uses one called mouse-trak from:

	 ITAC Systems Inc.,
	 Garland, TX.
	 75042

I've tried it but like 866.2 said click and drags on DECwindows are
a pain in the butt. The boss loves it though!

Re: .3: the company's phone # is (214)494-3073, and the cost is $179.

Does anyone in the LKG (Littleton, MA) area have one that can be tried?

RE: .3

That's the one!! Our developers are not fond of it, but the users
in NORAD seem to like it (you know how them government types are).
